What's in my gym?
Our rowing machine is a recent addition and one that wasn't on my radar before we got it. I love lifting weights and using interval training with both plyometric exercises and strength training to change my cardiovascular system. I've never loved steady state cardio, but I run a bit so my joints know they still need to be able to handle the impact.
But when the temperatures drop and the roads are icy or slushy, you will not find me doing much running. The rower has come in handy for a different kind of mental cardio challenge than intervals provide. Just like running, rowing challenges me to keep going even if I am tired or simply tired of rowing. This is also a great option for those with joints that hurt with too much impact. I've sprained my ankles and had one ACL reconstructed, so I have to be aware of the impact on those joints as I get older.
This month I am rowing more with some others at the gym to increase awareness of veteran su***de. We are rowing 22,000 meters this month because, on average, 22 veterans take their lives each day. As a wife, daughter, granddaughter, niece, cousin and aunt to veterans, this is personal for me. As I row, I remember that there are people who offer their lives in the service and defense of our country. I am thankful for their bravery. I also think of those I know and pray for strength and encouragement for them.
