I've been traveling internationally for the last week and yesterday was the first time I had access to a proper gym. Every day has included lots of walking, sometimes up steep mountains, sometimes around ruined castles, and also lots of delicious food.

I woke up early to lift some kilos, not because I feel bad about indulging in more food than normal, but because I love how it makes my body feel. I'm so grateful for what my body can do.

We've all got to work with what we've got, but my challenge to you today is to notice and be grateful for something your body can do.

I got this sweet note from a client this week.

I'm so grateful to do with I do, making a difference in people's lives. Our bodies are not the be-all and end-all of life. I know that we're just rearranging furniture on a sinking ship. But until that ship sinks, our bodies can help us get more out of the time we have: letting us do more and love more. That's why I .

In my quest to get more steps in each day, I join a few other ladies at least once a week for a run. Not that long ago, I would have thought this was a crazy idea: running approximately three miles in northern Maine through the winter?! Are you kidding me?! But ya know what? I like it! (Don't tell anyone; I mean, I still hate running.) The fellowship and encouragement of doing something hard with others makes it... fun?

Anyway, I guess it just goes to show that we weren't meant to do this life alone.

Who can YOU encourage this weekend?

Today we honor and thank each man and woman who has served or continues to serve in the defense of our country. May we not take our freedoms for granted, but instead use them to be good stewards of what we have and care for each other.

Many in the CrossFit world participated in Hero WOD Chad today: 1,000 step ups with a 45 # rucksack. Chad Wilkinson was a Navy SEAL who took his own life in 2018 due to the effects of numerous deployments, injuries, and PTSD.

I scaled the workout by only doing 500 reps, wearing a 40 # vest for the first hundred.

We all have hard things in life. There will be times you want to quit. We all need someone on our side, rooting for us, ready to land a helping hand or encouraging word. Let's be that for someone else.

Today marks one year of coaching at a local gym. Anniversaries like this are always a good time for reflection.

In the last year I have learned a lot about technique and cues. I've grown in my own mobility as I've worked with others on theirs. I've formed relationships with people I don't know if I would have otherwise met.

The youngest people I work with are four years old, at the school, not the gym. The oldest are in their sixties. I see people at almost every stage in between. There are vastly different goals, preferences, and personalities, but what I hope to inspire is the same: a love of movement, an appreciation of how our bodies are made and what they can do, and the tools to remain active for a lifetime.

I know I'm a better coach than I was a year ago, and I hope those I get to work with feel like they are better versions of themselves than they were a year ago.

Last month I checked a big one off my Maine bucket list. Mt Katahdin is Maine's highest mountain with several peaks over 5k feet. It's both a hike and a climb; a physical and mental challenge. Baxter State Park is a beautiful area and I can't wait to get back.

Now, I love me some gym time; I enjoy lifting weights and like pushing myself with high intensity interval training. But I also think it's beneficial to think outside the gym when it comes to health and fitness. So when Silent Sports Magazine asked me to write an article about what makes the area around Grand Marais, MN so special, I had no shortage of things to share. If you enjoy hiking and paddling like I do, it's a wonderful area to explore. I bet there are some lovely places to explore close to where you live too.

What's in my gym?

Glute bands, also called b***y bands or hip bands, these thick fabric bands don't slip down or dig in to your thighs.

I will add them to body weight squats either in my warm up or in accessory work after a strength session. Pressing my knees out against the band helps with more complete activation of my glutes and hamstrings.

I also use them with folks new to certain movements as a tactile cue to build good, safe, strong form.

These have helped me take certain exercises further and also made them more accessible to beginners. I love it!

Can I tell you something?

Teaching is hard. Often I feel inadequately trained or prepared. I'm not super creative, and I tend to take myself too seriously and have forgotten how to play. Starting to work with kids younger than I've worked with in the past has really stretched me outside my comfort zone. Some days I start with four-year-olds and finish with eighth graders and hit every grade in between without much of a break. Some days my plans work and some days nothing works for a couple of my classes (usually in the kindergarten to third grade range).

But this is why it's worth it to me. What is anything without a personal connection? Knowing that I make a difference - to middle schoolers, no less! - keeps me motivated. I love being a coach.

What's in my gym?

Our rowing machine is a recent addition and one that wasn't on my radar before we got it. I love lifting weights and using interval training with both plyometric exercises and strength training to change my cardiovascular system. I've never loved steady state cardio, but I run a bit so my joints know they still need to be able to handle the impact.

But when the temperatures drop and the roads are icy or slushy, you will not find me doing much running. The rower has come in handy for a different kind of mental cardio challenge than intervals provide. Just like running, rowing challenges me to keep going even if I am tired or simply tired of rowing. This is also a great option for those with joints that hurt with too much impact. I've sprained my ankles and had one ACL reconstructed, so I have to be aware of the impact on those joints as I get older.

This month I am rowing more with some others at the gym to increase awareness of veteran su***de. We are rowing 22,000 meters this month because, on average, 22 veterans take their lives each day. As a wife, daughter, granddaughter, niece, cousin and aunt to veterans, this is personal for me. As I row, I remember that there are people who offer their lives in the service and defense of our country. I am thankful for their bravery. I also think of those I know and pray for strength and encouragement for them.

What's in my gym?

Today I'm highlighting our weights set, one of my absolute favorite things in our gym. This was a significant purchase for us as it isn't cheap, but these are used most days. We haven't always had a designated room to work out in, so the space saving benefit of these can't be overstated.

The silver pegs in the middle of the stand are 2.5 # each and one or two can be inserted into each 5 # handle. After that, each additional plate added is another 5 #. This means I can lift 2.5 # in each hand up to 50 # in each hand. Talk about versatility! These dumbbells live on this one rack and can take care of every member of our family's different needs, covering both upper and lower body.

Personally, I love lifting with dumbbells because of all the extra stabilization that needs to happen. Sure, one might be able to press more on a machine, but this imitates real life. And what good is working out of it doesn't benefit real life, amiright?

Don't have real weights? Anything heavy can be lifted! Water bottles, milk jugs, books, my kid's backpack. Resistance training with heavy things can help prevent or lessen the muscle and bone loss that accompanies aging. Don't be afraid of it, but it is best to get guidance from a trained professional (like me 😁).
