✍️Tips for health and wellness goals!

🎇 New Years wasn’t that long ago and some people have either still not made goals or have already abandoned them. So I wanted to offer some tips:

1️⃣ Start anytime. There’s no wrong time to start, modify, or get rid of a goal.

2️⃣ Start small! Look at your end goal and then break it down into small achievable goals.

3️⃣ Think of adding positive habits rather than subtracting negative.

4️⃣ Listen to your body. Remember that rest can be vital to your success. Honor your body, take breaks, and shift priorities as you need them.

🫶 also offers wellness services so if you are struggling to meet your health or wellness goals please reach out!

🔥What causes holiday flares?

👉 It’s hard to say for sure but most commonly it seems to be associated with stress. This includes: worries or excitement, lack of sleep, decrease or increase in exercise, change in eating habits, forgotten medication, limited alone time, etc.

❤️‍🩹 Unfortunately, it’s not always possible to prevent a flare. However, for most it is easier to recover from a flare when you have made efforts to prevent it rather than wait until it’s happening. Please note that you are not failing if you put in efforts to prevent a flare but still end up having one.

💡 A few options to help with flares include: efforts to get good sleep, time to move your body even in non strenuous ways (walking or whatever your PT/OT has recommended), spend some time outside, set boundaries around people or topics that are triggering for you (ask your mental health provider for tips on this as needed), try to eat balanced meals or limit foods that have triggered pain in the past

🧑‍⚕️ Sometimes the most stressful part is the anticipation that you MAY flare. So discuss these worries with your provider(s) and have options in place just in case! Be gentle with yourself and take time away if you need it ❤️

🚫 As always, this is not medical advice and you should always consult your medical provider if you have any questions or concerns

🍂Holiday schedule notice: the office will be closed from 11/17-11/27. Your patience is so appreciated 🙏🏻

📧 Emails will be answered during this time, but responses may be delayed. All phone calls will be returned in the order they were received on 11/28.

🔥 Flares are exceedingly common during the holiday season so if you are concerned of this, let’s plan to discuss at your next visit to come up with management and prevention ideas!

👻 Really life scaries.
🏚️ A haunted house, but it’s full of:
-everyone who said “it’s just in your head”
-people wearing pads instead of pants
-people saying “just drink wine, you’ll be fine”
-all of the people who didn’t take your pain seriously
-people talking in medical jargon that you don’t understand
.
📝 Here is your reminder to find providers who take you concerns seriously and to trust your body if something feels off!

Posted • 🔍 Ten Naked Truths About the Pelvic Floor in Athletes ䷼

Pelvic floor dysfunction (PFD) 🚫 encompasses a range of conditions, from urinary issues 🚽 to pelvic pain 😖 and sexual dysfunction 💔.

Despite the widespread occurrence and consequences of PFD, it remains underreported by athletes. For example, a staggering 76% of female volleyball players have reported urinary symptoms linked to PFD. 🏐

Misinformation 🤔, misperceptions, and miseducation about PFD for both clinicians and athletes can adversely impact an athlete’s health ❤️, care 🩺, training 🏋️‍♂️, and performance 🥇.

Swipe ➡️ for this infographic diving into 10 evidence-based truths about the athlete’s pelvic floor:

1️⃣ Physical activity 🏃‍♀️ can be protective against PFD, yet its specific effects vary from one athlete to another.
2️⃣ Stress urinary incontinence? It's just one of the many PFD symptoms athletes face 🌊.
3️⃣ Both internal and external factors, like training intensity 🏋️‍♂️, can play into PFD risk in athletes.
4️⃣ Male athletes 🚹 are at risk too.
5️⃣ Young and childless athletes aren't exempt from PFD 🚸.
6️⃣ Comprehensive training should include pelvic floor exercises 🧘‍♂️.
7️⃣ PFD can impact an athlete's mental well-being 🧠 and performance, even pushing some to quit 🚫.
8️⃣ All health professionals working with athletes: routinely screen for PFD, regardless of age or gender. Tools like the PFD-SENTINEL 🛠 can be used to help.
9️⃣ An athletes' post-pregnancy phase is critical 🤰. We must ensure a seamless transition, complete with pelvic health checks ✔️ and a solid return-to-sport plan 🔄.
🔟 Every athlete is unique. PFD care should be, too, involving experts from multiple disciplines 🤝.

Clinicians working with athletes 🩺👟: Please share this infographic far and wide! By sharing 🔄, we can ensure both fellow clinicians and our patients are well-informed and can make proactive decisions about pelvic health 🌐.

Kudos to .physio & team for this valuable contribution to the field! 🎉 Let's amplify the dialogue on pelvic health in sports 💪🔬.

Posted • When you get a sweet message saying “just read this and thought about you,” but then you remember you’re a pelvic health PT… 🤣🤣

Not what I was expecting, but love that I get these types of messages!

But I’ll also take a minute to say to providers, PLEASE do not tell your patients “this is the worst I’ve ever seen” (or any variation of this)

While this may appear validating, it can also create a lot of fear and/or a sense of hopelessness.
