Meet Patsy. After surviving a rare, life-threatening aortic infection, she’s recovering thanks to the expertise and compassion of her MUSC Health care team.

Surgeons from our vascular and GI teams worked together on a complex open aortic repair using a cryopreserved aortic homograft flown in just for her.

“They’ve been awesome here; I couldn’t have asked for a better experience,” Patsy said. Her daughter added, “Everyone was phenomenal—from the ICU staff to her nurses and techs.”

Now in rehab, Patsy is focused on walking again, returning to teaching and spending time with her four grandkids.

Tidelands Health in partnership with MUSC Health, now offers a minimally invasive treatment for men with enlarged prostates — helping improve quality of life without the side effects of traditional surgery or medication.

Called aquablation, this robotic-guided procedure uses a heat-free water jet to remove excess prostate tissue with precision, helping patients urinate more easily and comfortably.

“You don’t have to live your life around restroom breaks,” said Dr. Lauren Cooley, a urologist and urological oncology specialist at Tidelands Health Urology.

When Darcell Lomack Jackson’s heart transplant last year affected her kidneys, her son, AJ Diggs, didn’t hesitate to step up as her living donor.

The MUSC Emergency Management team and MUSC and MUSC Health leadership teams continue to carefully monitor the path and potential impacts of Hurricane Idalia.

The Charleston area could receive heavy rainfall, possibly between 4 to 8 inches Wednesday night into Thursday morning. Eight-foot tides are projected for Wednesday night. Tropical storm-force winds and heavy rain bands are expected to arrive.

Charleston-area ambulatory clinics will close on Wednesday, August 30, at 3:00 p.m. On-peninsula clinics are expected to reopen at noon on Thursday, August 31. Off-peninsula clinics are expected to operate under normal hours on Thursday, August 31.

Virtual urgent care will remain available throughout the storm.
