Mobile sports betting has exploded in recent years. As of December 2025, 31 states, plus Washington, D.C., allow for some form of online sports betting. Public health researchers are reporting different outcome data, such as seeking help for gambling addiction, varying by state gambling legislation. According to Nora Volkow, Director at the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), “Mobile access has transformed the temporal, spatial, and psychological dynamics of gambling, compressing the cycle of urge, opportunity, and action into seconds and thereby amplifying risk for rapid escalation and in some instances catastrophic outcomes.” As with other forms of addiction, prevention will be an important factor in protecting those most at risk from problematic psychological, social, and financial consequences.

We are living in a world that is rife with societal divisions. The impact is experienced at the global level down to the family and friend level.  This impact has not been for the better (see the American Psychological Association’s 2025 Stress in America report).  This article on research by Rhia Catapano, Ph.D., provides useful insights into how to build understanding and improve communication.

As we continue to be inundated with information, we risk consuming at least some misinformation. The American Psychological Association is working to provide the public with educational tools to assist in developing misinformation detection skills. In this important minicast, we’re joined by Rochelle Hanson, Ph.D. to discuss the realities and long-term impact of childhood trauma and why early support and awareness matter.

Together, we describe how adverse experiences can shape emotional development, relationships, and mental health across the lifespan—and how communities, caregivers, and professionals can play a role in creating safer, more supportive environments for children.

This conversation highlights the importance of recognizing trauma, reducing stigma, and expanding access to compassionate, evidence-based, trauma-informed care across South Carolina.

A meaningful listen for parents, educators, caregivers, and anyone passionate about supporting healthier futures for the next generation.

Fear of missing out, also known as FOMO, refers to anxiety a person experiences when missing out on social activities.  New research suggests that FOMO is initiated by worries about missing bonding opportunities with a valued group, rather than missing an enjoyable experience.  Research participants worried that missing out would negatively affect their connection and future belonging with the group.  The researchers suggest their findings underscore the importance of human bonding  in an era of increasing reports of isolation.
