The Heart Health Program is both the pediatric weight management program of the MUSC Children’s Hospital and the preventive cardiology service of the Children's Heart Center. As a family-centered and lifestyle-oriented program, Heart Health is appropriate for any child or adolescent who has abnormal weight gain and/or associated cardiovascular risk factors, such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure, or pre-diabetes. With assistance from Boeing, Heart Health has gradually expanded to provide medical and
nutrition services at all three MUSC Children’s Hospital After Hours/Specialty Care sites (North
Charleston, Summerville, and Mt. We are extending our reach even farther through telemedicine-based nutrition services with Barnwell Pediatrics, Bamberg Family Practice, Sea Island Pediatrics, Georgetown Pediatrics, and Andrews Medical Center. Heart Health has also partnered with MUSC’s Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence to form the new MUSC Adolescent Bariatric Surgery Program, directed by Dr. Karl Byrne, with Dr. Henshaw (also board certified in obesity medicine) serving as the program’s pediatric medical advisor. Heart Health provides pre-op and post-op weight management guidance and support to adolescents meeting established criteria for bariatric surgery.
