July is National Culinary Arts Month!
With so many grab-and-go options and frozen dinners available, as a society we are moving away from cooking nutritious meals and moving towards convenience.
Working with a registered dietitian means having someone on your team helping you find rhythms for simple, healthy meals at home that will still work with your schedule. Whether that is meal prepping on the weekends, buying pre-cut produce, or simply finding healthier options when you do eat out, there is no one size fits all. I will help you choose SMART goals that will lead you to a healthier life.
July also tends to be a slower month for some families. To set up a nutrition consultation this month, direct message or call 304-545-6289.

People who eat more home-cooked meals not only tend to consume more fruits, vegetables and dietary fiber, but also eat less saturated fat and salt. Homemade food also can be budget-friendly and reduces use of takeout containers. Get started with these eight tips to develop basic cooking skills, espe...

Picky eating tips for kids AND adults.

1. Try, try again. It can take 15-20 times to develop a taste for a new food.

2. Do a “taste testing” activity weekly to make trying new foods a fun and normal occurrence. Is there a new fruit at the store that you’re curious about? Here is a great printable worksheet that kiddos can fill out with their thoughts on the new food!https://myplate-prod.azureedge.us/sites/default/files/2024-05/kids-food-critic-activity.pdf

3. Use Ellyn Satter’s division of responsibility: The adult is responsible for what, when, and where. The child is responsible for how much and whether. Try to make meals low stress by offering both comfortable foods and a new food at meals. Never force feed or make them stay at the table until their plate is empty- this causes kids to ignore their internal hunger cues.

4. Try things in many different forms! For example: if your child doesn’t like broccoli, use a food processor to break it up into very small pieces and mix it in Mac and cheese. Not a fan of blueberries? Blend them into yogurt so they can’t feel the texture of the blueberries as much but they can experience the taste! Try as many different forms of a food as you can.

Soup season is my #1 but cookout season is a close second!

The beginning of summer brings the unofficial start of grilling season. For some vegetarians and vegans, this means making do at backyard picnics with the same old soggy green salads — or worse — filling up at the chip bowl. But barbecues don't have to be a washout for those who don't eat meat!

Recipe round-up! Here are three of my favorite kid-tested and approved dinner recipes!

1. https://www.ahealthysliceoflife.com/munchkin-meals-broccoli-cheddar-quinoa-bites/
We love these broccoli bites (I recommend using your food processor for the broccoli to make prep even easier) and they are great reheated! For those toddlers that are picky about protein foods, quinoa actually has some protein in it (8 grams per cup cooked) and it cooks just like rice!

2. https://ohsheglows.com/adrianas-fave-10-minute-pasta-toddler-friendly/
10 minutes?!? It's true! Tip: I always use chickpea pasta for added protein and fiber. My favorite is . The hummus seems like a weird addition but trust me... It adds a nice creaminess. I always have the ingredients for this on hand just incase something comes up and we need a quick meal.

This Super Healthy Kids Turkey Meatloaf is a hit every single time. My family loves this recipe. Serve with a steamed veggie and you've got yourself a meal!

Research is clear that a pro-inflammatory diet (like the standard American diet) is associated with poor health outcomes. In this study of people with knee osteoarthritis, a pro-inflammatory diet seemed to be associated with increased pain. Moving toward a more anti-inflammatory eating pattern may help to reduce pain!

Incase you’ve wondered about Ozempic, this is worth the full read. Important to note: research has shown that when individuals go off of the drug, they gain back 2/3 of their weight. This is why seeing a dietitian and addressing lifestyle changes is so essential.

Today we will be discussing the notorious TikTok-endorsed weight loss drug, Ozempic, and its lesser-known cousins, Mounjaro, and Wegovy. We dive into the research about these medications and discuss potential risks and benefits. It's finally

Looking for a good meal prep plan? This cookbook gives step by step instructions for your prep day, and during the week all you do is assemble and bake. It’s not one of those meal prep plans where you have to microwave your foods and eat the same thing every day- there is so much variety. Also, since you’re finishing cooking on the night you eat it, it tastes like a freshly cooked meal! If you have kids, the kid friendly meal plan weeks are marked. ☺️

I am gluten free, so everything in this cookbook is also GF, but if you would want regular pasta/bread/etc. it would be an easy swap. There are also swap ideas provided for paleo and low carb!

You can find it on Amazon!

Want a healthier you in 2024? It won’t come with a magic pill, or a 3 week “reset.” It won’t come with that new supplement or kitchen appliance either. It will take work.

We live in a state where health is not the main priority, so choosing to change your lifestyle will feel like swimming upstream for a while.

Consistency is THE MOST IMPORTANT thing, and when you set up a healthier environment, surround yourself with like minded individuals who also want to take care of themselves, and set aside time for cooking and movement, it gets easier and easier.

Put systems into place to support your goals. If you need help setting up those systems and navigating the realm of food and nutrition this year, I can be your guide!

I will be offering grocery store “tours” as part of my nutrition package this year to help you feel even more confident in your shopping, prepping and cooking.
