💫 Provider Spotlight: John Hissom, Counselor 💫

John Hissom brings nearly 38 years of dedication, wisdom, and compassion to the mental health and recovery field. He holds both a BA and MA in psychology, along with post-graduate education in psychology, and has also studied ministerial classes, serving as a minister in the past. His professional journey has been deeply rooted in helping others, beginning in college with work on a su***de hotline and expanding into a wide variety of roles across the mental health system. Over the years, John has worked in community mental health agencies, in-home services, foster care, and group homes. He has provided counseling at a Job Corps Center, offered psychological services within prisons, supported children and adolescents in therapy, and guided adults through detox programs in mental health hospitals. He has also served as a CPS worker, advocating for families and children in need.

John has spent much of his career working in addictions and recovery with several different agencies, always committed to helping people rebuild their lives and find meaning beyond harmful behaviors. At MSRC, he feels he has found a home where his passion and purpose align. For John, recovery is not just about quitting the use of addictive substances, it is about building a life that is fulfilling, enjoyable, and free from the desire to use substances or destructive behaviors as a way to cope. He believes in helping clients discover their own strengths, develop healthier ways of living, and create sustainable change that fosters long-term well-being.

What John values most about his role at MSRC is the sense of teamwork and family within the organization. He notes that in all his years of service, the devotion to clients and to one another at MSRC stands out as the highest he has ever known. His extensive experience, compassionate approach, and unwavering commitment make him not only a counselor but also a trusted guide and advocate for those navigating the path of recovery.

✨ John’s legacy in the field speaks for itself, almost four decades of helping individuals heal, grow, and thrive, making him a cornerstone of the MSRC team.

💜 Employee Testimony for National Recovery Month 💜
Courtney Ferrell, PRSS

As a PRSS at Mountain State Recovery Center, I’ve worked here for over three years. About six months in, my world was shattered when my daughter took her life due to addiction and mental health struggles. That moment rocked me to my core and left me questioning my purpose and whether I could continue this type of work. I remember asking myself, “Why keep trying to help people when I couldn’t help one of the most important people in my life, my own child?”

I was reminded of something I was told in early recovery: that God would put me exactly where I needed to be, exactly when I needed to be there. During that heartbreaking time, that place was here at Mountain State Recovery Center. My coworkers, from the owners to the providers, the front office staff, the counselors, my fellow PRSS’s, and patients rallied around me. They showed me compassion, encouraged me, and believed in me when I didn’t believe in myself. They reminded me that I was not alone. They didn’t expect me to be okay, but they stood by me like family, and that made all the difference.

Because of that love and support, I was able to stay sober and keep moving forward. MSRC isn’t just a MAT clinic. It’s a family that walks with you through the hardest moments and celebrates the victories right beside you, whether you’re a patient or a coworker.

That’s my story. Raw, real, and from the heart. It takes a village to recover, and Mountain State is my village. 💜

If you feel led, we’d love for you to share a piece of your own recovery story in the comments. You never know who may need to hear it today.

🌟 “Recovery is not one big step. It’s a thousand small ones.” 🌟

Every journey begins with that very first step and for many, it starts right here, by walking through our doors. At Mountain State Recovery Center, we believe that lasting change isn’t about sudden leaps, it’s about consistent, meaningful progress. Each small step, showing up, asking for help, taking your medication, going to counseling, sharing your story, celebrating your wins, builds into something life-changing.

Through evidence-based MAT, compassionate support, and a team that walks alongside you, we’re here to remind you that no step is too small and no victory is too minor. Progress is progress, and every step matters. 💙

🚪 If you’ve been waiting for the right time to start, maybe today is the day to take that first step through our door. Because here, hope isn’t just a word, it’s the beginning of your journey.
