💫 Provider Spotlight: John Hissom, Counselor 💫
John Hissom brings nearly 38 years of dedication, wisdom, and compassion to the mental health and recovery field. He holds both a BA and MA in psychology, along with post-graduate education in psychology, and has also studied ministerial classes, serving as a minister in the past. His professional journey has been deeply rooted in helping others, beginning in college with work on a su***de hotline and expanding into a wide variety of roles across the mental health system. Over the years, John has worked in community mental health agencies, in-home services, foster care, and group homes. He has provided counseling at a Job Corps Center, offered psychological services within prisons, supported children and adolescents in therapy, and guided adults through detox programs in mental health hospitals. He has also served as a CPS worker, advocating for families and children in need.
John has spent much of his career working in addictions and recovery with several different agencies, always committed to helping people rebuild their lives and find meaning beyond harmful behaviors. At MSRC, he feels he has found a home where his passion and purpose align. For John, recovery is not just about quitting the use of addictive substances, it is about building a life that is fulfilling, enjoyable, and free from the desire to use substances or destructive behaviors as a way to cope. He believes in helping clients discover their own strengths, develop healthier ways of living, and create sustainable change that fosters long-term well-being.
What John values most about his role at MSRC is the sense of teamwork and family within the organization. He notes that in all his years of service, the devotion to clients and to one another at MSRC stands out as the highest he has ever known. His extensive experience, compassionate approach, and unwavering commitment make him not only a counselor but also a trusted guide and advocate for those navigating the path of recovery.
