A head and neck cancer survivors story - WLTX News19 anchor J. R. Berry’s voice has helped him create moving and impactful stories during his long and award-winning career in television. A cancer in his throat threatened to end his career as a broadcaster. His physician in Columbia, SC recommended he come to our HCA Healthcare Head & Neck Specialists l Charleston for his cancer treatment. He did and it was successful. Attention all golfers - He shot an 83 while he was in AFib. Theirs is a “From Long Island to the Lowcountry” story. They had hoped to move here decades ago. They smiled broadly when they talked about how friendly Lowcountry families are in the more than year they’ve lived here. He had never had a heart issue until recently when he was on the golf course. She’s a retired nurse of 40+ years. Dr. Mason is a board-certified neurosurgeon specializing in complex spinal and cranial disorders. He graduated medical school from Ohio State University College of Medicine. He completed his residency at the Cleveland Clinic and fellowship at Emory University.

A celebration and a time for reflection - We recognized the three Berkeley County Emergency Medical Services - EMS first responders who provided the department’s first pre-hospital blood transfusion to a patient who had suffered a life-threatening trauma.

The patient survived largely due to the new program approved by Berkeley County Government, which allows blood transfusion to be given while a person is being taken to a hospital via ambulance.

Today, colleagues at HCA Healthcare Trident Hospital, HCA Healthcare Summerville Hospital, HCA Healthcare Colleton Hospital, HCA Healthcare South Atlantic Division and HCA Healthcare Live Oak Mental Health and Wellness showed up to box more 10,000 pounds of food and sort more than 12,000 pounds of sweet potatoes at the Lowcountry Food Bank. The food will be distributed to school-based food pantries.
