I get a lot of questions about metabolism from my patients. I know -- it’s a confusing subject. And it doesn’t help having misinformation about how to speed up your metabolism from late night TV commercials and internet ads. Here is an overview of how your metabolism works and the role it plays in your health.

Metabolism is the chemical process where nutrients are converted into energy or calories. It’s one of the most essential processes in our body.

Many of my patients are living with depression and anxiety. I have a few tactics that help manage their conditions, but I’m always interested in learning about new techniques. One of those is deep brain stimulation — it’s not available yet because more research is needed. Still, it sounds promising. Here’s what you need to know.

Brain stimulation therapies such as DBS suggest that deep stimulation therapy can help with epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease & other mental disorders.

I get lots of questions about certain foods from my patients, particularly the foods that seem to gain popularity overnight. Food crazes usually occur when a new study finds unknown health benefits in a specific food. Food manufacturers then create products involving that food and market it. But are the processed versions of these healthy foods still healthy? In many cases, they aren’t — at least not as healthy as you think. Here are six so-called healthy foods along with four runner ups.

Some of the foods we consider “healthy” often have benefits in their natural form. But as the food undergoes processing, its nutrients are stripped. Learn more.

Unhealthy cholesterol numbers raise your risk for heart disease. But don’t assume your heart is healthy because your total cholesterol is below 200. Half of patients with ideal cholesterol have an underlying heart condition. And half of heart attack sufferers have normal total cholesterol levels. Here’s why there’s more to heart health than just cholesterol.

The year I graduated from medical school, 1982, a brave new world of cardiology was just beginning. Researchers conducting a trial of the drug lovastatin discovered it lowered cholesterol in a small group of patients with a genetic predisposition for dangerously high cholesterol. Thursday April 6th 7-8pm

Right now, the average American lives into their late 70s. But longevity experts expect normal lifespan to soon exceed 100 years of age. While medical advances will get us part of the way, lifestyle choices will continue to determine our lifespan and our health span, the period of our lives we live without disease.

Join me for a discussion about the things we can do to live longer and live healthier. We'll look at the science behind aging and discuss how we can influence our health as we get older. And we'll answer your questions about longevity.

I look forward to seeing you and discussing this important health topic. Register for the online webinar at https://mdvip.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_RwzBcOD6Ss-pWjlWN9XJ_g

Dr. Edward Giove, DO

Dr. Giove hails from New Jersey and has degrees from Rutgers University and the University of Medicine & Dentistry of New Jersey - School of Osteopathic Medicine (now Rowan School of Osteopathic Medicine). This board-certified physician has practiced family medicine for more than 20 years so he can quickly zero in on what’s needed to get you healthy – and keep you that way.

As a Daniel Island resident since 2001, it has long been a dream of Dr. Giove’s to open his own medical practice on the island. He is excited to be a part of Liberty Doctors and is looking forward to having his wife, Amy, working by his side to make the dream a reality.

Dr. Giove and Amy have four teenagers, who keep life fun and always interesting. In his spare time, he enjoys golfing (poorly), watching Philadelphia sports teams, traveling with his family, and boating.
