Join us next Saturday, Sept. 6 for the 4th annual MUSC Hollings Cup Regatta in the Charleston Harbor! Sailing enthusiasts of all skill levels are invited to come together for a fun-filled day of competition. Not a sailor? No problem! You can still be part of the action on our spectator boat, The Charleston Princess, to watch the excitement while enjoying light bites and beverages.

Following the event, everyone is invited to the after-party at the James Island Yacht Club! Party tickets are available to the public, so even if you aren't sailing, you're welcome to join us from 6 to 9 p.m. Tickets include admission, food, beverages, live music from Anthony Del Porto, and lots more fun. Feel free to bring the whole family. This is a kid-friendly event and free for children!

Best of all, the regatta raises money for innovative and lifesaving cancer research at Hollings. Join us for this exciting race and support our researchers as they work toward new treatments and cures for tomorrow’s cancer patients.

Art therapy support group returns in September!

This group uses art-making to help adult cancer survivors to process their emotions around diagnosis, treatment and afterward. It's led by a board-certified art therapist and is free, thanks to donations to the Patient Services Support Fund.

Sessions will be 5:30-7 p.m. Thursdays at Synchronicity in Mount Pleasant. Because the sessions build on each other, we ask that you plan to attend all eight sessions.

For more information or to RSVP, contact Anne Puckett at hanleya@musc.edu.

Congratulations to our re**al cancer team, who earned reaccreditation from the National Accreditation Program for Re**al Cancer by the American College of Surgeons.

Hollings is the only program in South Carolina to earn this distinction. Accreditation shows that a program follows evidence-based medicine with a patient-centered approach.

Re**al cancer develops in the re**um, the last five or so inches of the colon. If you've reached your 45th birthday, you should be on a regular schedule for colore**al cancer screening!

Congratulations to Haley Hughett, R.N., lead nurse at our infusion suite in the Hollings building on the Charleston peninsula, who earned her Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN) certification.

Earning OCN certification signifies a nurse's depth and breadth of specialized knowledge. An OCN nurse must have two years of experience, 2,000 practice hours, and 10 hours of nursing continuing education in oncology to be eligible to take a 165-question test in six subject areas.

Thank you for all that you do for our patients, Haley!

Trying to quit va**ng? 🚭 You’re not alone. A new study at MUSC Hollings Cancer Center and Smilow Cancer Hospital is testing whether a medication that helps people stop smoking can also help e-cigarette users quit.

With va**ng on the rise and no approved treatments for people who want to stop, this research could change the game. We’re proud to help make people healthier!

New trial to test whether quit-smoking medication works to help people to quit va**ng.

🎉 Congratulations to MUSC graduate student Thomas Blouin, who received a F31 fellowship from NIH’s National Cancer Institute! The fellowship supports predoctoral students as they prepare for promising careers in cancer research.

Along with his mentor, Hollings researcher Dr. Natalie Saini, Thomas will examine how the common chemical formaldehyde damages vulnerable regions of DNA to drive cancer risk. His findings could uncover clues about why some people are more likely to develop cancer and inform future prevention strategies to reduce that risk.

Learn more about this exciting research:

MUSC student Thomas Blouin will use an NCI fellowship to study how a chemical that doesn't seem to change DNA still causes cancer.
