"The care team helped me recover quickly, and the nurses and nursing assistants/techs were consistently professional, supportive and compassionate."

After Myrtle Beach resident Adam Willard was diagnosed with re**al cancer, he turned to MUSC Hollings Cancer Center Gastrointestinal Cancer Surgeon Dr. Colleen Ashley Donahue and team for treatment, including chemotherapy, radiation and tumor removal, last November. Four days later, he was back home.

Today, Adam is continuing his recovery with milestones already behind him, including the removal of his port.

During Colore**al Cancer Awareness Month, stories like Adam’s highlight the importance of timely screening, coordinated care and support throughout treatment.

At 34, William Burr was shocked to learn that symptoms he thought were minor were actually stage 3 re**al cancer.

At MUSC Hollings Cancer Center, a multidisciplinary team quickly developed an aggressive treatment plan, guiding him through radiation and chemotherapy while he continued working and caring for his young family.

After completing treatment, Burr received the news he had hoped for: no evidence of disease. His experience underscores the rise of colore**al cancer in younger adults and the importance of paying attention to symptoms and seeking care early.

Colon cancer is one of the most preventable cancers with routine screening. For most people, that screening should start at age 45.

Screenings can help catch changes early, often before symptoms begin, when treatment is most effective.

"The care I received can only be called heroic."

At 69, Patty Lancos was hospitalized with severe heart failure and placed on life support when she wasn’t eligible for a transplant. MUSC Health Cardiologist Dr. Houston used the Impella CP, a small heart pump, to help her heart rest and recover while her family prepared for the worst.

But Patty had other plans.

With her family by her side, she rallied. Today, she’s back to enjoying retirement, traveling and spending time with her six grandchildren. And this spring, she and her husband are setting off on a 12-day cruise from Venice to Athens.

"Medical technology, and the wonderful doctors and nurses and technicians who utilize this technology, is amazing. I want to thank you for what you do to help patients like me. Never underestimate your impact. My recovery is the miracle that so many of my family and friends prayed for. So, thank you. Thank you."

“Fish oil supplements are everywhere, and people take them for a range of reasons, often without a clear understanding of their long-term effects.”

New research from the Medical University of South Carolina is challenging assumptions about fish oil and brain health. In a first-of-its-kind study, MUSC scientists found that certain components of fish oil may impair the brain’s ability to heal after repeated mild traumatic brain injury.

Led by Dr. Onder Albayram, the study highlights how biology is context-dependent and why a deeper understanding of supplements is critical.

A new remote monitoring program allows patients with hypertension to track their numbers from home, with data sent directly to their care team. In a state where about one in three people have high blood pressure, this approach could make a meaningful difference.

Led by Dr. Thompson Barr, the program makes it easier to catch issues early and adjust treatment quickly. Because hypertension often has no symptoms, consistent monitoring is key to preventing serious conditions like stroke, heart attack and heart failure.

With simple, plug-in devices and support from the MUSC Center for Telehealth, patients can stay connected to their care without extra trips to the doctor.

Debra Campbell, inventory manager/coordinator at MUSC Health Florence Medical Center, thought her exhaustion was just part of a busy life. But when she mentioned it at a routine checkup, her doctor ordered tests that revealed something far more serious: colon cancer.

Now 25 years cancer-free, Campbell shares her story to encourage others to pay attention to symptoms like fatigue, anemia, blood in the stool, unexplained weight loss or lasting changes in bowel habits.

The P*e Dee IceCats took time this month to recognize their athletic trainer, Mikayla Gafford, for National Athletic Trainers Month. Mikayla is an FTE athletic trainer for the team as part of MUSC Health Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine.

Athletic trainers are licensed health care professionals who help prevent, diagnose, and treat injuries, keeping athletes healthy and ready to play.

“She works day in and day out, giving our guys the best care they need to ensure they are healthy to play,” they said.

MUSC Health Florence Medical Center is proud to be the premier health care sponsor for the IceCats.

Struggling to fall asleep or stay asleep? You’re not alone. At MUSC Health's SMART clinic, about 80% of patients seek help for sleep issues, often alongside anxiety or depression.

Our experts say improving sleep often means changing habits, not just medications. A therapy called cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia can help retrain the brain for healthier sleep.

A few tips specialists recommend:
• Keep a consistent sleep and wake time
• Use your bed only for sleep
• Get out of bed if you can’t fall asleep
• Focus on meaningful daytime activities that support your mental health
