Charleston County Medical Society

Charleston County Medical Society The local unit of the South Carolina Medical Association In this capacity it continued to function until 1951.

The Charleston County Medical Society (CCMS), founded in 1951, is a lineal descendant of the first medical society of the state, the Medical Society of South Carolina (MSSC). This older society was established in Charleston in 1789 with a view to developing a statewide membership. In 1848 it became one of the component district societies, which made up the South Carolina Medical Association (SCMA). When the districts of the state were divided into counties, the Medical Society of South Carolina assumed the status of a county society. In that year the complexities of managing Roper Hospital, which it owned, had become sufficiently great enough that a new and independent group dedicated entirely to the organizational affairs of physicians and their patients was needed. The Charleston County Medical Society was created for that purpose and replaced the older society as the local unit of the South Carolina Medical Association while the Medical Society of South Carolina has continued to operate Roper Hospital, The SCMA is, in turn, a component of the American Medical Association (AMA). Thus it is through the local, state, and national associations that individual physicians are represented in their efforts to improve medical care to their patients.

Congratulations to the Medical University of South Carolina Class of 1976 that celebrated their Golden Graduate Reunion on March 19.

We’re especially proud to recognize CCMS board member Dr. Thaddeus Bell, who was one of only five African American graduates of the medical school that year. Today, Dr. Bell continues to serve our community through his active medical practice and leadership of the Closing the Gap in Healthcare initiative.

Thank you for your dedication to advancing healthcare in our community!

Legislation & Advocacy: Why Your Voice Matters

As Elizabeth H. Mack, MD, MS reminds us, “Health care is political and we’re either on the menu or at the table.”

With bills this session impacting scope of practice, standards of care, and patient access, physician engagement is critical. The General Assembly meets January through May, and key healthcare legislation remains active.

Build relationships with legislators, follow hearings, and work with your specialty society’s advocacy team. Your expertise is essential and your patients deserve a seat at the table.

The Charleston County Medical Society supports H.4767, legislation that would prohibit noncompete clauses in South Carolina physician contracts.

Noncompete restrictions can disrupt continuity of care, limit patient access to trusted physicians, and interfere with professional autonomy. This bill protects patient choice while allowing reasonable business protections.

This legislation is now moving forward for a House floor vote, and your voice matters.

We urge all physicians to:
-Contact your House members
-Advocate for a YES vote on H.4767
-Encourage colleagues to do the same

When physicians engage in advocacy, we strengthen patient care across South Carolina.

Chronic absenteeism is a growing concern, but Medical Homebound Instruction (MHI) isn’t always the solution. 🏫⚠️

MHI is meant for short-term use for students physically unable to attend school, and prolonged use can worsen anxiety, depression, and learning outcomes. Physicians: before signing off on MHI, explore alternative school accommodations and collaborate with the school nurse.
