Wherever you are in your yoga journey - we invite you to practice with us. Move | Align | Strength | Rest + Reset | Breathe Lowcountry Yoga is a boutique studio that combines the spirit of the lowcountry with the practice of yoga. In exquisite form, the lowcountry integrates old and new. Similarly, Lowcountry Yoga integrates the mechanics and philosophy of yoga, connecting the physical with the mental and emotional. In every class, we focus on building heat inside the body to build strength and stretch our bodies to new limits. Whether we use weights or no weights, go fast or slow, the goal is to always connect with our minds, bodies and surroundings. There are times when you need to let it all out through soul-pouring sweat and there are times when you need slow, deliberate movement to take you to places you didn’t expect. Sometimes you just need some fun and a place to get away. Whatever you need – we have the class for you!

Tonight, we talk about the pieces we hide.

The fears, the grief, the anger, the ache — the ones that whisper when the world goes quiet.

This World Mental Health Day, join me for a short, live session on facing and embracing your shadow.

We’ll explore what happens when we stop fighting our emotions and start listening to them.

💬 Today I’m Dealing With…

Thank you for sharing.
Thank you for being vulnerable.

The simple fact is — we’re all dealing with something.
If we’re not now, we have been.
And if we haven’t yet, we will someday.

It’s part of being human.

Anxiety. Divorce. Embarrassment. Imposter syndrome.
Grief. Fatigue. Lost jobs. Lost babies. False beliefs.

Every one of us is walking through something unseen.

When we share what we’re really carrying, the weight begins to shift.
It comes out from the shadows and into the light.
We can see it for what it is — not for the fear of what it could be.
That’s when it loses its power.

However deep the pain, healing doesn’t begin with fixing —
it begins with naming.

We have to name what’s happening in order to know how to care for it.
How to tend to ourselves.
How to begin again.

When we speak our truth — even in anonymous ink on a wall —
we take back power from the pain.

And no matter how hard it is, remember:
• You are not your struggle — this is a passing moment, rich with lessons.
• The awareness you bring now creates the peace you’ll feel later.
• Healing begins the moment you look yourself in the eyes and say, “This is what I’m dealing with.”
• Strength comes from knowing who you are — and trusting that person completely.

The Body Keeps the Score
~ Bessel van der Kolk, M.D.

🔴 20% of Americans were sexually molested as a child.
🔴 25% were beaten by a parent to the point of leaving a mark.
🔴 33% of couples engage in physical violence.
🔴 25% grew up with alcoholic relatives.
🔴 12.5% witnessed their mother being beaten or hit.

Trauma is far more common than we think — and though we are resilient, these experiences leave traces.

They live in the body, in the nervous system and in the ways we relate to ourselves and others.

Trauma literally changes the brain: it alters how we process information, respond to stress and feel alive in the present moment. It can make relationships, trust and self-regulation profoundly difficult — but healing is possible.

Dr. Van Der Kolk outlines three main pathways toward healing:
1️⃣ Cognitive: talking, understanding, connecting and processing.
2️⃣ Clinical: medication and neurological interventions.
3️⃣ Physical: engaging the body directly to restore safety and agency.

🧘‍♀️ Yoga lives in that third path.
It invites us to breathe where we once held our breath, to move where we once froze, to feel where we once went numb.

Each time we step onto the mat, we tell our body: "you are safe now".

We teach the nervous system to trust again, moment by moment, breath by breath.

If you’ve lived through trauma — you are not broken.

Your body has been protecting you.
And with compassion, connection, and practice, your body can also be your path home.

Generational trauma is what happens when our ancestors experienced trauma—war, abuse, addiction, loss, poverty, racism, displacement, betrayal—and didn’t have the tools, safety, or language to heal it.

Instead of processing those emotions, the body and psyche adapted to survive—and those adaptations got encoded into family systems, behaviors, beliefs and even gene expression.

💔 Generational trauma shows up as:
• Emotional inheritance: Anxiety, hypervigilance or fear of abandonment that doesn’t match your personal history.
• Behavioral patterns: People-pleasing, perfectionism, addiction or over-responsibility that once served to keep peace or safety.
• Relational dynamics: Repeating toxic relationship cycles, avoiding intimacy or confusing love with chaos.
• Physical symptoms: Chronic stress responses, autoimmune disorders or nervous system dysregulation linked to unhealed stress chemistry in family lines.

🧬 Science tells us:

That trauma can alter how genes are expressed, influencing stress hormone regulation and emotional reactivity in children and grandchildren—even when they never directly experienced the original trauma. (Epigenetic research)

But—and this is the hopeful part—healing also changes gene expression.

🧘 Meditation, therapy, yoga and safe relationships can literally rewire our stress responses and stop the transmission.

🌱 How to Heal

Healing doesn’t mean fixing your family—it means interrupting the pattern.

You heal generational trauma when you:
• Feel what your parents couldn’t.
• Speak what was forbidden.
• Set boundaries where chaos once ruled.
• Choose consciousness over repetition.

Every time you regulate your nervous system, tell the truth or choose love over fear, you’re not just healing yourself—you’re reprogramming your lineage.

It's real. It's scary.

You're brave. You can do this. ❤️

You’re not alone.

Anxiety disorders are among the most common mental-health conditions in the U.S., with nearly 1 in 5 adults experiencing one in the past year (NIH).

If you’ve ever felt anxious, you already know—yoga can be a powerful ally for the nervous system.

Through pranayama (breathwork), we activate the vagus nerve and support the parasympathetic system—the body’s “rest-and-restore” mode. Regular practice helps us step out of constant fight-or-flight, and over time, consistent movement and mindfulness literally change our brain chemistry—improving emotion regulation, attention, body awareness, and stress response.

Yoga doesn’t “turn off” worry—it retrains the body’s stress response. With practice, we learn how to move from reactivity into calm.

It’s more than movement or postures (asanas).
It’s a lifestyle—a way to feel whole, centered, and healthy from the inside out.

Want to slow down? Join us for any one of our Rest + Reset or Breathe: Pranayama classes for an opportunity to slow down both your body and mind.

Let the thoughts come and go - let the silence soothe you.

To me yoga is alignment with the Source of all that is, oneness with deepest truth.

On the mat I practice being present and merging with that oneness.

Off the mat, my practice helps guide me towards presence when life is challenging.

My practice allows me to slow down, to go inward, and to restore.

The mantras show up instead of the racing thoughts.

Trusting that I am supported and guided by Source.

Cultivating gratitude for so many blessings in my life.

I discovered yoga about fifteen years ago, and it has transformed my life in countless, meaningful ways. My journey began in a sunroom-turned-studio, learning from my daughter Kelly, newly trained as a yoga teacher. That intimate beginning led me to pursue a 200-hour teacher training at Yogaworks in Pacific Palisades, where I was fortunate to learn from inspiring teachers and fellow students. I immersed myself in the eight limbs of yoga—its history, philosophy, and practice—and returned home a changed man, committed to walking the yogic path.

One of the great joys of this journey has been sharing yoga with others. I find deep fulfillment in introducing people to the practice and the peace it can bring. To me, yoga is about cultivating strength, quieting the mind, and opening the heart. It’s a practice that nurtures both the self and the community around us.

Whenever I step into a yoga studio, I feel an immediate sense of belonging. Yoga consistently attracts extraordinary people and encourages the best in all of us. It’s a community rooted in kindness, curiosity, and mutual support.

I've come to understand that yoga is a lifelong study—an ever-deepening well of wisdom. There’s always more to learn, and that endless depth is what continues to draw me in. I’m humbled by the lineage of practitioners—men and women, young and old—who have shaped this tradition over centuries.

Off the mat, yoga has made me stronger, more mindful, and more compassionate. It remains a guiding force in my life, and I intend to practice and teach it for as long as I’m able—until the candle flickers.

Yoga is integration. Empowerment.
A journey inward unveiling our true essence.

Yoga celebrates what already is.
Yoga blends.

Yoga is a steering. A compass.
It’s the pivot for a new way of moving and being.

It’s intention.
Tying the strands of the mind.

Yoga reminds.

The practice of energy shifts.
The practice of connection.
The mat cleanses my mind; time after time.

Yoga is plugging into the full experience of life — practicing acceptance, authenticity, and presence. On the mat, moving my body through yoga is gentle medicine. I move my body because I love my body, and yoga lets me do that in a mindful, nourishing way. Because of yoga, I hope I’ll still love moving my body when I’m 100. Off the mat, yoga gifts me mindfulness, proprioception, and compassion, helping me live with less pain and greater clarity.

Yoga has taught me there’s no “wrong” or “bad” way to feel. I carry that into parenting — extending grace to my child’s experience and holding it close when motherhood throws curveballs. My practice helps me notice the small, subtle things. Yoga makes me more compassionate with others and gentler with myself, reminding me that life isn’t about perfection, it’s about presence.

Yoga has been part of my life for over 25 years, first drawing me in through the physical challenge. Along the way, I spent many years teaching and training others, and had the privilege of helping to share yoga across the U.S. through education and events. That chapter of my journey deeply shaped how I see yoga—not just as postures, but as a practice of meeting people with openness, curiosity, and joy.

As I’ve grown older, my practice has become less about “doing” and more about awareness—of my breath, of how my body moves, and of how I show up in life. Yoga reminds me daily to stay present and steady, no matter what’s happening around me.

In my classes, I love bringing both challenge and lightness. We laugh a lot, explore poses from different perspectives, and learn not to take ourselves too seriously. Yoga, to me, is both grounding and playful—a way of moving through life with more resilience, gratitude, and joy.
