Each year, the second week of April is dedicated to the hard working public safety telecommunicators that help keep us safe in 911 centers and public safety communications centers across America. Here at Kanawha County Emergency Ambulance Authority, we are grateful for our communications team, who work in our 24/7 communications center, supporting our field operations and helping us get help to the people we serve. We also get to celebrate the 911 telecommunicators at Metro 911 of Kanawha County, who answer the call when the public needs emergency medical help. All of these folks and telecommunicators across the nation are the voices behind the radio that help keep the public safe. Please join us we celebrate the this week and every week.
Happy National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week!

We were honored to have KCEAA leadership be part of this watershed moment for EMS providers across the nation and proud to be part of effecting change.

NAEMT’s 2026 EMS On The Hill Day shattered attendance records! We took our message straight to Capitol lawmakers to fight for Treatment in Place (TIP), MIH-CP, and the resources our providers deserve.

"EMS must be at the table. Our unified voice is decisive." Read the full recap from NAEMT Advocacy Chair Steve Kroll: https://news.naemt.org/a-unified-voice-record-breaking-2026-ems-on-the-hill-day-drives-policy-change/

Where has the time gone? Jason Sergent started as a baby EMT for Kanawha County Ambulance and over the years advanced to become a critical care paramedic, a shift supervisor and most recently was elevated to Director of Operations for our agency. Today marks 30 years of service for him with KCEAA and that's a lot to celebrate. Congratulations, Director Sergent!

Today marks 15 years for Roger Pennington, a mainstay of our maintenance department since 2011. With a network of EMS stations throughout the county and several buildings at our central offices, Roger has worked to maintain, construct and remodel all our facilities through the years. It is hard work that does not go unnoticed and we would like to thank him for his service on his milestone anniversary with KCEAA. Congratulations!

Today was the first of two sessions of training for First Responders in successfully communicating with intellectual and developmental disabilities. We were honored and grateful to have Steven Slack lead the class, which was part of a partnership with Exceptional Possibilities of WV. We host another free session next Friday, April 10, for any first responder in the region. Check out the electronic flyer below to register for this valuable instruction.

Big News! Our Legislation is Complete!

Governor Patrick Morrisey has signed HB 5168 to create our state's first permanent EMS funding and SB 645 to reform out-of-network ambulance billing. Other bills signed into law expand education grants (HB 5212), enhance retirement benefits (SB 724 & SB 977), and protect first responders (SB 4)—representing the biggest changes to WV’s EMS system in decades.

By strengthening funding, updating insurance laws, expanding educational opportunities, and supporting our dedicated EMS professionals, West Virginia is reshaping emergency medical services for the future. Thank you to Patrick Morrisey and the numerous members of the West Virginia Legislature who played a part in this incredible progress!

Share this post and thank the Governor and any legislators you contacted during the session for their support.

It's hard to believe, but today marks 25 years with KCEAA for two of our supervisory personnel, Chief of Operations David Nuckols and Communications Supervisor Rachel Vance. Both have risen in their respective areas of our agency during their time here. Chief Nuckols, who oversees all operations for one of our two day shifts, is a critical care Paramedic who also has served on our team deployed during natural disasters to assist in the emergency medical response. Rachel Vance is an EMT who supervises our 24/7 Communications Center, overseeing the movement of our units around the clock and managing schedules for all personnel in the field. We thank them for the years of service and congratulate them both on this big achievement. Congratulations! (And here's to the next 25?)
