📓✏️👣 As school approaches, it's essential for teachers and athletes, who spend long hours on their feet, to prioritize foot care.
Dr. Adam Brown from Carolina Foot & Ankle Specialists/West Ashley highlights that after a less active summer, transitioning back to a busy school routine can be challenging. For those who remained active, the change may be minimal, but those who wore less supportive footwear (flip flops or bare feet) may need to adjust.
Shoe Recommendations:
- Choose shoes with a wide fit and ample toe depth for comfort.
- Ensure adequate arch support and a firm heel counter.
- Avoid open-backed or sling-back designs; opt for athletic shoes with solid rubber soles if allowed.
Orthotics:
If your shoes lack support, consider custom orthotics available at our office, typically covered by South Carolina state health insurance for one pair annually. Orthotics can be a game changer for so many people with foot, ankle, knee, hip or back pain. They typically last for 4-5 years. Check with your insurance company for more information.
Common Issues:
Unsupportive shoes can lead to conditions like plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendonitis, or foot pain. Symptoms may arise quickly for those who shift from minimal activity to long hours on their feet. Dr. Brown suggests rolling your foot on a lacrosse ball for relief.
If pain persists despite changes in footwear or rest, schedule an appointment with us.
Additional Care Tips:
- To combat excessive sweating and prevent athlete's foot, use foot powder and alternate shoes daily. Try an antiperspirant on your feet if sweating continues.
- Transitioning back to closed shoes after summer sandals can lead to ingrown nails; switching shoe types can help ease discomfort. If pain persists, a simple procedure in our office can provide immediate relief.
For students, we recommend supportive shoes suitable for school activities instead of flip-flops.
