The benefits of yoga in schools and endless🍎✏️

New research continues to come out on the positive impacts of incorporating yoga programs and mindfulness practices in schools.

The cool thing is…yoga can be practiced anywhere at anytime! You literally don’t need anything except your body and breath. Whether it’s a 30 second breathing exercise or a 5 minute movement break, students will feel better than they did before.

Children should LOVE to learn!!
Encouraging movement and mindfulness in the classroom allows students and teachers to THRIVE🌟

Imitation is the foundation of language development🔑

Before a child can begin to imitate sounds and words, they have to be able to imitate actions and gestures (waving, clapping, stomping, blowing kisses, etc). AND they have to be motivated to imitate!

I have personally found yoga to be an amazing way to increase nonverbal and verbal imitation skills for babies and toddlers. Here are a few tips I use in my sessions:

🌟Repetitive songs: Nursery rhymes and fingerplay songs are my favorite when working on imitation because they are repetitive, engaging and usually incorporate motor skills and actions. Depending on the level of the child, you can model gestures, actions, or words while in a yoga pose. Repetition and routine is KEY! If you find yourself singing the same song over and over again that means it’s working!
Example: Sing “Twinkle-Twinkle Little Star” while standing or dancing in star pose. Add little movements or gestures (pointing, clapping, waving) to keep kids engaged. Try to repeat the same exact routine each time you do it!

🌟Model communicative gestures and actions: Gestures and nonverbal language are prerequisites for verbal speech. Wave to the sun while doing sun salutations, stomp or march like the child’s favorite animal, blow kisses or bubbles. Use your imagination!

🌟Use Exclamatory Words or “silly” words: These are simple, funny and motivating words that naturally come up in play. “Whoosh, zoom, uh-oh, boom, beep, ew” and animal noises are a few favorites. When you exaggerate these words, kids become even more motivated to imitate them!

Try these Animal Breaths with your littles!

🐰Breath: Use when your child is sleepy or feeling lazy. This breath will help clear their mind and make them more awake and alert. Make it fun by asking what different scents the bunny smells or counting how long they can exhale through their nose!

🐍Breath: Use when your child is nervous, anxious or just a little bit too energetic. This breath will help slowww down their heart rate and help their body feel calm. *Bonus: great way to work on the ‘s’ sound!

🐻Breath: Use before nap time or bedtime. This restorative breath calms the mind and body and helps us feel peace and balance. Cuddle up and guide them through a quick body scan to help your child feel relaxed from their head to their toes!

These cards are my fav🧡🙌🏻☮️

Yoga makes learning FUN!

Children learn best through movement and play. Yoga can help enhance a child’s sensory experiences and stimulate the brain to learn and retain information more easily. Language concepts can be naturally embedded into movement activities while motivating children to learn and grow!
