After Hurricane Helene disrupted the U.S. IV fluid supply, MUSC’s anesthesia team — led by Dr. Carlee Clark, Dr. Nicole McCoy, Dr. Carey Brewbaker & others — cut IV fluid use by 60% without delaying surgeries.
Their smart, patient-focused approach is now shaping care nationwide.

A year ago today, Hurricane Helene hit hard and caused a nationwide shortage of IV fluids.

At MUSC, our anesthesia team didn’t wait for solutions. They created them. By rethinking how we hydrate patients before surgery, they kept procedures moving and patients safe.

Their work is now published and helping other hospitals prepare for the unexpected.
