Every breath counts — yet for millions of people worldwide, breathing doesn’t come easily. Today, on World COPD Awareness Day, we shed light on Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) — a serious, progressive lung condition that makes it hard to breathe and affects over 300 million people globally.

What is COPD?

COPD is an umbrella term that includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema. It causes narrowing and damage to the airways, making it difficult for air to move in and out of the lungs.

Common symptoms include:

Persistent cough (often with mucus)

Shortness of breath during daily activities

Wheezing or tightness in the chest

Frequent respiratory infections

Fatigue and low exercise tolerance

Main causes:

Long-term smoking (the leading cause)

Prolonged exposure to air pollution, dust, or chemicals

Genetic factors (like Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency)

Prevention and management tips:

Quit smoking — it’s never too late to stop lung damage.

Get regular lung check-ups and spirometry tests for early detection.

Exercise regularly to improve lung strength and endurance.

Eat a balanced diet to support immune health.

At Lowcountry Wellness Center, we’re dedicated to helping patients manage COPD symptoms, improve lung function, and enhance their quality of life through personalized care plans, smoking cessation programs, and pulmonary rehabilitation.

Antibiotic resistance is one of the biggest threats to modern medicine — and it can affect anyone, anywhere. When bacteria become resistant to antibiotics, infections become harder to treat, leading to longer illnesses, more hospital stays, and even deaths.

How antibiotic resistance develops:

Overuse of antibiotics for viral infections

Not completing the full course of prescribed medication

Using leftover antibiotics or self-medicating

Misuse in livestock or agriculture

Why this matters to all of us:

Resistant infections can spread within communities and healthcare settings.

Common medical procedures (like surgeries or cancer treatments) become riskier without effective antibiotics.

New antibiotic development is slow — meaning prevention is our best defense.

At Lowcountry Wellness Center, we practice antibiotic stewardship, ensuring every prescription is evidence-based and necessary. We also help patients understand when alternative treatments — like rest, hydration, or antivirals — are more appropriate.

Protect your health and the future of medicine. Before asking for antibiotics, talk to your provider about the safest and most effective treatment for your symptoms.

Managing GERD often starts with everyday habits. The good news is that small, consistent changes can lead to big improvements in comfort and overall digestive health.

Healthy lifestyle tips for GERD management:

Eat mindfully: Choose smaller meals and chew thoroughly.

Avoid late-night eating: Stop eating at least 2–3 hours before bed.

Elevate your head while sleeping: A slight incline can help prevent acid reflux during the night.

Quit smoking: Ni****ne weakens the lower esophageal sphincter, making reflux worse.

Stay active: Gentle exercise supports digestion and a healthy weight.

Manage stress: Try yoga, meditation, or breathing exercises to calm the digestive system.

Why it matters: Chronic GERD, if left untreated, can lead to esophageal damage or conditions like Barrett’s esophagus — making proper management essential.
Don’t let GERD disrupt your daily life — schedule a consultation today and take control of your digestive health!

One of the greatest strengths of Direct Primary Care is the personal connection between patients and providers. Unlike traditional practices, where you might see a different provider every visit, DPC prioritizes building an ongoing, trusted relationship.

Why this matters:

You’re known by name, not by chart number.

Your provider understands your health history, preferences, and goals.

You can discuss mental, emotional, and physical health openly.

Care plans are tailored uniquely to your lifestyle and wellness journey.

This trust creates a stronger foundation for preventive care, better health outcomes, and peace of mind knowing someone truly has your back.

Experience healthcare that feels personal. Join Low Country Wellness Center’s DPC program and get care that grows with you. Contact us today at 843-793-1353 or visit us at 1565 Sam Rittenberg Blvd Suite 201, Charleston, SC 29407. You can also visit our website: lowcountry-wellness.com.

This week marks U.S. Antibiotic Awareness Week, a national initiative to promote the safe and responsible use of antibiotics. While antibiotics have saved millions of lives, their misuse and overuse have led to a growing global problem — antibiotic resistance.

When antibiotics are used too often or incorrectly, bacteria can become resistant, making infections harder (or sometimes impossible) to treat.

Key facts you should know:

Antibiotics only treat bacterial infections, not viral ones like colds or flu.

Taking antibiotics when not needed can harm your gut health and make bacteria stronger.

Resistant bacteria can spread easily — in communities, hospitals, and even through food.

What you can do:

Only take antibiotics when prescribed by a licensed healthcare provider.

Follow the dosage and timing exactly as directed.

Never share or save leftover antibiotics.

At Lowcountry Wellness Center, we’re committed to prescribing antibiotics safely and educating patients about when they’re truly needed. Responsible antibiotic use today ensures these life-saving medicines remain effective tomorrow.
If you’re unsure whether you need antibiotics, consult our providers first — we’re here to guide you toward the right treatment.

Many people with GERD find their symptoms worsen after certain foods, drinks, or habits. Understanding your personal triggers is a key part of managing the condition effectively.

Common GERD triggers include:

Spicy and fatty foods

Caffeine and carbonated drinks

Citrus fruits and tomato-based products

Chocolate and peppermint

Alcohol

Lying down or sleeping right after eating

Other risk factors that can worsen reflux:

Being overweight or pregnant

Smoking

High stress levels

Tight clothing around the abdomen

Keeping a food and symptom diary can help you identify what specifically triggers your symptoms. Once you recognize your triggers, you can make better choices that support your digestive health.

At Lowcountry Wellness Center, we provide personalized GERD management plans, including dietary counseling, lifestyle recommendations, and, when needed, medical treatments that help you find relief.

It’s GERD Awareness Week, a time to shine a light on a condition that affects millions worldwide — Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD). Often mistaken for simple heartburn, GERD is a chronic digestive disorder where stomach acid flows back into the esophagus, causing irritation and discomfort.

Common symptoms of GERD include:

Burning sensation in the chest (heartburn)

Regurgitation of food or sour liquid

Difficulty swallowing or persistent cough

Hoarseness or sore throat

While occasional heartburn is common, frequent or severe symptoms may indicate GERD and should not be ignored. Untreated GERD can lead to inflammation, ulcers, or even precancerous changes in the esophagus.

Simple lifestyle changes can help manage symptoms:

Eat smaller, balanced meals

Avoid lying down immediately after eating

Limit acidic or fatty foods, caffeine, and alcohol

Maintain a healthy weight and avoid smoking

At Lowcountry Wellness Center, we’re committed to helping patients identify and manage GERD early through comprehensive care and lifestyle guidance.

Call us today at 843-793-1353 or visit us at 1565 Sam Rittenberg Blvd Suite 201, Charleston, SC 29407. We offer same-day or next-day appointments for urgent needs. You can also visit our website: lowcountry-wellness.com

Every year on November 17, the world observes World Prematurity Day, a time to raise awareness about the challenges faced by babies born too soon and to honor the strength of their families. Premature birth — defined as birth before 37 weeks of pregnancy — is one of the leading causes of newborn complications and infant mortality worldwide.

At Lowcountry Wellness Center, we stand with families of preemies and recognize the incredible courage it takes to navigate this journey. Understanding prematurity and its impact can help ensure better outcomes for both babies and parents.

Key facts about premature birth:

About 1 in 10 babies is born prematurely.

Preterm babies often need specialized care in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs).

Early delivery can occur due to multiple factors such as infections, chronic conditions, or complications during pregnancy.

Common health challenges for premature babies:

Breathing difficulties due to underdeveloped lungs

Difficulty feeding and maintaining body temperature

Increased risk of infection

Developmental delays in early years

How to support preemie health and prevention:

Get regular prenatal check-ups and screenings

Maintain a healthy diet and manage chronic conditions

Avoid smoking, alcohol, and stress during pregnancy

Seek early medical attention for warning signs like preterm contractions

Premature babies are fighters, and with early intervention, specialized medical care, and family support, many go on to thrive.

If you or someone you know is expecting, make sure to stay proactive with prenatal care and regular checkups. Contact us today to schedule your appointment and protect both mother and baby’s health.
