When it comes to glaucoma, early detection can make all the difference. While there is no cure, timely treatment can significantly slow disease progression and preserve vision for years—or even decades. That’s why Glaucoma Awareness Month emphasizes consistent monitoring and long-term care, not just one-time screening.

Glaucoma management may include prescription eye drops, laser treatments, or surgery depending on severity. However, ongoing medical support plays a key role in treatment success. Medication adherence, managing chronic health conditions, and maintaining regular follow-up appointments are all essential components of care.

Key Steps to Protect Vision Long-Term:

Schedule routine eye exams, especially if at higher risk

Follow treatment plans exactly as prescribed

Manage chronic conditions like diabetes and hypertension

Maintain a healthy lifestyle that supports circulation and nerve health

Communicate new symptoms or medication side effects promptly

At Lowcountry Wellness Center, we partner with our patients and specialty providers to ensure care is coordinated and comprehensive. We understand that vision health affects independence, safety, and quality of life—and we believe preventive medicine is the strongest defense.

Protecting your eyesight is not just about seeing clearly today, but about preserving your ability to live fully tomorrow.

Take a proactive step this Glaucoma Awareness Month. Schedule your preventive visit with Lowcountry Wellness Center and let us support your long-term vision and overall wellness.

Understanding your personal risk factors for glaucoma is one of the most important steps in preventing vision loss. While anyone can develop glaucoma, certain individuals are at a higher risk and may benefit from more frequent eye evaluations and coordinated medical care.

Glaucoma doesn’t discriminate, but it does follow patterns. Many risk factors overlap with common chronic health conditions that primary care providers help manage every day. This makes routine medical visits an essential part of protecting your long-term vision.

Common Glaucoma Risk Factors Include:

Age 60 and older

Family history of glaucoma

Diabetes or insulin resistance

High blood pressure or cardiovascular disease

Long-term steroid use

Eye injuries or trauma

Certain autoimmune or inflammatory conditions

Because glaucoma often progresses without symptoms, relying on how your eyes “feel” is not enough. Regular eye exams, especially for those with risk factors, are essential. Equally important is managing underlying health conditions that can impact blood flow and nerve health—including the optic nerve.

At Lowcountry Wellness Center, we take a whole-person approach. By managing chronic conditions, reviewing medications, and addressing lifestyle factors, we help reduce overall health risks that may contribute to glaucoma progression. Preventive care isn’t just about one organ—it’s about how the entire body works together.
Know your risks and take control of your health. Call us at 843-793-1353 or visit us at 1565 Sam Rittenberg Blvd Suite 201, Charleston, SC 29407.

Glaucoma Awareness Month is an important reminder that protecting your vision is a vital part of protecting your overall health. Glaucoma is often called the “silent thief of sight” because it can cause irreversible vision loss without noticeable symptoms in its early stages. Many people don’t realize they have glaucoma until significant damage has already occurred—which is why awareness and early detection are critical.

Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve, most often related to increased pressure inside the eye. Over time, this damage can lead to peripheral vision loss and, if untreated, blindness. While glaucoma cannot be cured, early diagnosis and proper management can slow progression and preserve vision.

Why Glaucoma Awareness Matters:

Vision loss from glaucoma is permanent but preventable with early care

Symptoms often don’t appear until later stages

Risk increases with age and certain medical conditions

Regular eye exams can detect glaucoma before vision changes occur

Early treatment helps protect independence and quality of life

At Lowcountry Wellness Center, we emphasize preventive care and coordination with trusted specialists. While glaucoma is diagnosed by eye care professionals, primary care plays an essential role in identifying risk factors such as diabetes, high blood pressure, family history, and medication use—all of which can influence eye health.
Your vision is deeply connected to your overall wellness. Awareness is the first step toward protecting it.

Make preventive care a priority. Schedule a wellness visit with Lowcountry Wellness Center to review your health risks and ensure you’re staying proactive about your vision and overall health.

Paget’s Awareness Day is an important opportunity to highlight a condition that is often misunderstood and underdiagnosed: Paget’s disease. Paget’s disease most commonly refers to Paget’s disease of bone, a chronic disorder that affects how bones remodel and repair themselves. In some cases, the term may also refer to Paget’s disease of the breast, a rare form of breast cancer that presents with skin changes. While these conditions are different, they share one critical message—early recognition and medical evaluation are essential.

Paget’s disease of bone occurs when normal bone recycling becomes disrupted, leading to bones that are enlarged, weakened, or misshapen. Many people live with the condition for years without symptoms, while others may experience bone pain, joint stiffness, fractures, or changes in posture. Because symptoms can be subtle or mistaken for aging or arthritis, awareness plays a vital role in early diagnosis and prevention of complications.

Key Facts About Paget’s Disease:

Often affects older adults

May involve the spine, pelvis, skull, or legs

Symptoms can include bone pain, deformities, or fractures

Can be detected through blood tests and imaging

Early treatment helps reduce complications and improve quality of life

Paget’s disease of the breast, while rare, may cause ni**le changes, redness, itching, or flaking skin and should always be evaluated promptly. Any persistent or unusual changes deserve medical attention.

One of the most challenging aspects of cervical health conditions is that early stages often present with no symptoms at all. However, as conditions progress, the body may begin to signal that something isn’t right. Understanding when to seek medical attention can make a significant difference in outcomes.

While symptoms do not always mean cancer, they should never be ignored. Prompt evaluation allows for early diagnosis and timely treatment.

Symptoms That Should Be Checked Promptly:

Abnormal vaginal bleeding

Bleeding after in*******se

Pelvic or lower back pain

Pain during in*******se

Unusual vaginal discharge

These symptoms can be related to many conditions—not just cervical cancer—but they always warrant medical evaluation. Waiting or self-diagnosing can delay care and increase stress.

At Lowcountry Wellness Center, we believe in listening carefully to our patients. We provide thorough evaluations and individualized care plans designed to address concerns early and effectively.

Don’t ignore changes in your body. If something feels off, schedule a visit with Lowcountry Wellness Center for timely, compassionate care.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is one of the most common viruses worldwide, and most sexually active individuals will encounter it at some point in their lives. While many HPV infections clear on their own, certain high-risk strains can lead to cervical cell changes and, if left untreated, cervical cancer. Understanding HPV is a critical part of protecting long-term cervical health.

HPV often causes no symptoms, which is why regular screening is so important. Many people may carry the virus for years without knowing it. Education and routine testing are key components of prevention.

Important Facts About HPV:

HPV is extremely common and often asymptomatic

Certain strains are linked to cervical cancer

The immune system can clear many HPV infections naturally

Regular screening detects HPV-related changes early

HPV is not a reflection of lifestyle or personal choices—it’s a public health issue that requires medical awareness and compassionate care. Open conversations with your healthcare provider help reduce stigma and improve outcomes.

At Lowcountry Wellness Center, we emphasize education, prevention, and evidence-based care. Whether you have questions about HPV testing or follow-up care, we are here to guide you with clarity and respect.

Pap smears and HPV testing are two of the most powerful tools we have to protect cervical health. These simple, routine screenings are designed to detect abnormal cervical cells and high-risk strains of the human papillomavirus (HPV) before they progress into more serious conditions. Yet many people delay or skip screenings due to fear, misinformation, or busy schedules.

A Pap smear examines cervical cells for changes that may indicate precancer or cancer. HPV testing identifies the presence of high-risk HPV strains known to cause cervical cancer. Together, these tests allow providers to detect issues early—often years before cancer could develop.

Key Facts About Cervical Screening:

Cervical cancer often develops slowly and silently

Pap smears can detect abnormal cells early

HPV testing helps identify cancer risk sooner

Screening intervals vary based on age and health history

Early detection allows for less invasive treatment options

Skipping screenings doesn’t reduce risk—it delays diagnosis. Regular preventive visits allow your provider to determine the appropriate screening schedule for you and address any concerns in a supportive environment.

At Lowcountry Wellness Center, we prioritize patient comfort, education, and personalized care. Our goal is to make preventive screenings approachable and empowering—not stressful.

If you’re due—or overdue—for a Pap smear or HPV test, now is the time and stay proactive about your health.

Cervical Health Awareness Month is an important time to bring attention to a part of women’s health that is often overlooked until symptoms appear. The cervix plays a vital role in reproductive health, pregnancy, and overall gynecologic wellness. Conditions affecting the cervix—such as cervical dysplasia, HPV infection, and cervical cancer—can often develop silently, without noticeable symptoms in early stages. That’s why awareness and routine screening are so critical.

Cervical cancer is one of the most preventable cancers when proper screening and follow-up care are in place. Advances in medical care have made early detection highly effective, but prevention depends on education, access to care, and consistent medical follow-through. At Lowcountry Wellness Center, we believe knowledge empowers patients to take control of their health before problems arise.

Why Cervical Health Awareness Is Essential:

Many cervical conditions show no early warning signs
Routine screening can detect abnormal cells before cancer develops
HPV is common and often asymptomatic
Early intervention leads to better outcomes and fewer complications
Preventive care reduces long-term health risks and stress

Cervical health is not just about cancer prevention—it’s also about hormonal balance, reproductive planning, immune health, and quality of life. Regular medical visits provide an opportunity to discuss symptoms, concerns, and lifestyle factors that influence gynecologic health.

Awareness starts with action. Call us at 843-793-1353 or visit us at 1565 Sam Rittenberg Blvd Suite 201, Charleston, SC 29407. You can also visit our website: lowcountry-wellness.com. We offer same-day or next-day appointments for urgent needs, ensuring you get the care and support you deserve.
