The City of Goose Creek Police Department arrived at Lowcountry Oncology Associates’ Summerville office yesterday morning to support one of their own who was starting chemotherapy. PTL Connor Baldwin was recently diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, which is a type of cancer involving the lymphatic system. With a cancer diagnosis and starting chemotherapy, a patient can have a whirlwind of emotions, but having the support from family and a great team is always a blessing! This is exactly what was shown today with Officer Baldwin’s immediate family, Police family, and our LOA team rallying around him for support! Thoughts & prayers are with Office Baldwin as his treatment begins, but we know that he will approach this challenge with the same courage and determination shown while serving his community.

Recognizing the Early Signs of Breast Cancer

1. A New Lump or Mass
One of the most common early signs of breast cancer is the presence of a new lump or mass in the breast or underarm area (not all breast lumps are cancer, but they should be evaluated by a healthcare provider). These lumps are often painless, hard, and have irregular edges, but they can also be soft, round, and tender.
2. Changes in Breast Size or Shape
Noticeable changes in the size or shape of your breast can be a sign of breast cancer. This could include swelling in part of the breast or an overall change in the breast's contour
3. Skin Changes
Keep an eye out for any unusual changes in the skin of your breast. This can include dimpling, redness, or a rash. Sometimes, the skin may appear thickened or have a texture similar to an orange peel
4. Ni**le Changes
Changes in the ni**le, such as inversion (turning inward), discharge (other than breast milk), or pain, can also be early indicators of breast cancer. Any unusual discharge, especially if it is bloody, should be checked by a healthcare provider
5. Breast or Ni**le Pain
While breast cancer is often painless, some individuals may experience pain or tenderness in the breast or ni**le area. Persistent pain that does not go away should be evaluated
6. Swelling or Thickening
Swelling or thickening of part of the breast, even if no lump is felt, can be a sign of breast cancer. This symptom can sometimes be mistaken for an infection or other benign condition.
7. Swollen Lymph nodes
Swollen lymph nodes under the arm or near the collarbone may indicate breast cancer, even before the primary tumor in the breast becomes detectable by touch.

Taking Action

Being familiar with the normal appearance and feel of your breasts is essential for maintaining breast health. If you notice any of these symptoms, it's important to see a healthcare provider for further evaluation. Early detection through regular self-exams and mammograms can significantly improve the chances of successful treatment.

Remember, these symptoms can also be caused by conditions other than cancer. However, it's always better to be cautious and get any unusual changes checked out.

Lowcountry Oncology would like to end the week by recognizing Charity Hickman, LOA’s Mixing Technician, and her Grandmother, who have both been a huge part of Dragon Boat Charleston.

In 2003, Charity and her newborn son were living with her grandparents. Her grandmother, Sylvia, had a newspaper on the table. There was an ad for Dragon Boat Charleston. Silvia was a two-time breast cancer survivor and explained that this was a team for cancer survivors. She said, "I'm going to do this." Charity had no idea about the impact that this decision would have on her life. Silvia babysat Charity’s son, as she worked nights, but that did not stop her. She would bring him to the docks and have someone pick him up so she could practice. She met the most amazing people. Soon, she would be traveling all over in festivals and races. She was 64 when she started, and she kept going. She even got Charity’s grandfather to paddle, as he was a cancer survivor as well. It was around 2007 when Dragon Boat Charleston traveled to China to race. Dragon Boat racing became a huge part of her life. She paddled, drummed, and coached. At this year's festival, Charity was told how Silvia coached an all-men's team, and that is where "Sylvia's Dream" came from. In 2015, Silvia found out her cancer had returned. It wasn't breast cancer this time, but in multiple locations all over. She was not able to do all the things she once did. Her Dragon Boat family ended up coming to her. There were new things all over Silvia’s porch each day. When she passed, Charity and her family had a church ceremony, but the dragon boat family had their own at Brittlebank Park. With family on a boat and friends on the bank, we spread some of her ashes right there in the river. She is always with her team. In 2021, Charity was diagnosed with breast cancer. Two surgeries and four weeks of radiation later, she was cancer free. When the opportunity to paddle for Lowcountry Oncology Associates came up, there was no question Charity was all in!

Thank you so much Charity for letting us share your story and teaching all of us at LOA the history of Dragon Boat Charleston!
