Drs. Yulia Gavrilova, Tatiana Davidson, Kenneth Ruggiero, and other collaborators published a new study in the Journal of Burn Care Research.

The study examined the Burn Behavioral Health (BBH) program, a stepped-care model providing mental health services to burn patients from inpatient to outpatient care. Of 1,203 eligible patients, 84% completed initial screening, with 44% showing risk for PTSD or depression. Early intervention was provided to 95% of those at risk, and follow-up showed ongoing engagement and interest in services. Findings support BBH’s ability to improve access and quality of mental health care for burn patients.

Congratulations to third-year medical student Maya Andrade for her outstanding academic and research achievement! 🏆 She was awarded first place in the student abstract presentation contest at the Southern Region Burn Conference last month for her project titled "The Predictive Utility of Total Body Surface Area Versus Cutaneous Functional Units in Whole Body Impairment Rating After Burn Injury."

The Southern Region Burn Conference is globally recognized as the second-largest annual burn meeting, following the American Burn Association (ABA) Annual Meeting. Demonstrating the significance of her work, Maya's abstract has also been accepted for a podium presentation at the upcoming ABA Annual Meeting.

Dr. Yulia Gavrilova, Director of the Burn Behavioral Health Program at MUSC, presented new research at the 2025 Southern Region Burn Conference. Her talk, “Validation of the Injured Trauma Survivor Screen (ITSS) to Predict PTSD and Depression in Burn Patients,” shared results from the first study evaluating early mental health risk screening using the ITSS in burn survivors.

The team analyzed data from more than 550 burn patients and found that the ITSS - a brief, 9-item risk screener previously validated only in traumatic injury survivors - demonstrated good predictive validity for PTSD and depression at one-month post-injury in burn patient population. These findings highlight the tool’s potential to fill a major gap in burn care, where standardized psychological screening is still lacking nationwide.

Dr. Gavrilova’s work supports early identification of mental health risk and more proactive psychological intervention for burn survivors, contributing to improved patient outcomes and more efficient burn center care.
