The month of September is recognized as National Su***de Prevention Month. While we continue to work on preventative measures every day, this month sheds more light on the glooming epidemic that has plagued our community.
To date, Americans have experienced the highest combined rates of death due to alcohol, drugs, and su***de than any other country. And to make matters worse, children and youth suicidal rates have reached an all-time high.
So, how can we bring awareness and help prevent these tragedies from taking place? We change our mindset. Here are a few tips to remember:
🌿 Check In — Check on your loved ones, colleagues, neighbors, etc. Just because someone says they are “ok” doesn’t mean they are. Anyone can be fighting these thoughts.
🌿 Listen — Sometimes, a person who is struggling may just need a sounding board to express their feelings. Maybe they need advice or guidance to seek professional services.
🌿 Encourage — Remind the person(s) that there is hope, and that they are not alone. Talking more about thoughts of su***de can break the stigma and encourage others to get the help they need.
🌿 Support — A simple hug, visit, prayer, other kind gestures and reminders that they are safe with you, can make all the difference to a person who is in pain and contemplating taking their life.
If you or someone you know is in crisis and thinking of harming yourself or others, call or text 988 to get connected to the National Su***de Prevention Lifeline. Remember, you are not alone. 💚
