As a trainee, Dr. DeAnna Baker Frost observed how her mentors built strong, lasting connections with their patients. Those experiences helped shape her approach to care as a rheumatologist.

Today at MUSC, she treats individuals with autoimmune diseases like scleroderma. Their strength motivates her every day and drives her dedication to advancing research.

Beyond the clinic, she enjoys connecting with patients at conferences and learning from their stories. One patient even gave her a butterfly magnet that says "Hope," a reminder of the impact her work can have.

Now he’s back, older and preparing to apply to medical school. His return to shadow Dr. Alejandro Spiotta shows how early exposure to medicine can shape a student’s future.

Cancer research is advancing in Charleston in a big way!

Leukogene Therapeutics is the first company to join the portfolio of MUSC’s new venture fund, 1824 Health Ventures. Their work targets “cold tumors,” which are especially difficult to treat because they don’t respond to immunotherapy.

With this investment, Leukogene is one step closer to bringing new hope to patients facing advanced-stage cancer.

Last week’s Student Activities and Volunteer Fair brought together students from every MUSC college for an afternoon on the Horseshoe near the library.

Dozens of student organizations were represented, including the Student Government Association, University Student Ambassadors, and the Chess Club. The event gave students a chance to explore how they can get involved and make the most of their time at MUSC.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make the day a success!

Not every medical student ends up in the specialty they expected.

During her time at MUSC, Dr. Sarah Book thought she would pursue anything but psychiatry. But after rotating through different areas of medicine, she found herself drawn to the field and the meaningful work it offered.

Today, she is helping expand access to treatment for opioid use disorder across South Carolina and mentoring future physicians.

Outside of her clinical and research work, Dr. Book enjoys spending time with her family and friends, practicing yoga, and reading.
