Dr. Taylor Allen is bringing her experience and perspective home to South Carolina in a new way!

She grew up in the Upstate, graduated from the University of South Carolina, and is now in Charleston to begin her fellowship at MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital.

As the state’s first pediatric intensive care unit fellow, she’s helping to launch a program that will expand access to advanced pediatric training and care across the state.

If you’ve visited the MUSC Library recently, you may have noticed something new at the entrance.

Many Hands, Light Work is a tile mural created by Emily Clanton, a mixed media artist and public health researcher. It honors the contributions of MUSC students across all colleges and invites us to consider the role of care in both learning and healing.

Stop by and see this beautiful piece in person!

Innovation is happening every day at MUSC, and the Zucker Institute for Innovation Commercialization (ZIIC) is helping make it possible.

ZIIC works with researchers to turn ideas into real-world solutions. Two recent examples include a new surgical tool from VayuClear and a promising cancer therapy from Lipo-ImmunoTech.

Both were created by MUSC faculty and are now moving forward with support from ZIIC.

The MUSC campus has been focused on connection for more than 70 years.

In the 1950s, the hospital bridge helped link buildings and people across MUSC. Today, our walkways serve the same purpose, supporting the daily movement of students, faculty, and staff.

These changes reflect a long-term vision to make MUSC more accessible, efficient, and connected—then and now.

We are proud to announce a historic first for South Carolina!

The MUSC College of Nursing is launching the state’s first Acute Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner program beginning Fall 2026.

This exciting new program will prepare nurses to care for children in high-acuity settings like ICUs and emergency departments. With MSN and DNP pathways and hands-on clinical experience at MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital, this is a major step forward for pediatric healthcare in our state.

MUSC is preparing students for the future of healthcare with a new AI-integrated curriculum!

This fall, the Bachelor of Science in Healthcare Studies program will introduce artificial intelligence across all courses. Students will work with generative AI, predictive analytics, simulations, and decision-support tools to build real-world skills in a fully online format.

“By integrating AI into the program, we are providing students with the tools to drive healthcare innovation, improve patient care, and lead within their communities,” said Dr. Lauren Gellar, director of the Division of Healthcare Studies.

Founded in 1824, the Medical University of South Carolina has grown through decades of innovation and change.

We are excited to introduce our “Then and Now” series, highlighting the places, people, and moments that have shaped MUSC’s history and continue to influence our future.

Our first feature highlights the James W. Colbert Education Center and Library. The top photo shows the building during construction in 1970, followed by what it looks like today.

Over the years, this space has undergone major renovations and improvements to remain a central hub for academic life, supporting students, faculty, and researchers across campus.

Before starting her senior year of college, Megan VanGarven is spending her summer advancing pediatric cancer research at MUSC Hollings Cancer Center.

With a grant awarded by the St. Baldrick's Foundation, she is studying pediatric sarcomas. These rare and aggressive cancers affect children and teens and are often difficult to treat. Megan is exploring how combination therapies could lead to safer and more effective treatments.
