Welcome to Boston, Mbarara University of Science and Technology colleagues!

Our Nursing Team, led by Director Mary Sebert and Project Coordinator Skeeter Welder, warmly welcomed the Ugandan delegation from Mbarara University of Science and Technology to Boston on July 15, 2024. The team spent their first afternoon at the MGH Institute of Health Professions (IHP), where they met with Dr. Kathryn Sabo, Director of the Ruth Sleeper Nursing Center for Clinical Education. They participated in a workshop for IHP nursing students involved in nurse-led screening, referrals, education, and support services for residents of Charlestown and the Greater Boston area. Additionally, Dr. Sabo provided them with information about the IHP IMPACT Center, which facilitates integrated services by student teams from various health professions as part of their clinical training.

πŸ“£ Published: Read our latest report documenting the mental and physical harm experienced by children in detention in the US. This groundbreaking investigation was conducted by the Asylum Clinic at the Massachusetts General Hospital Center for Global Health, the FranΓ§ois-Xavier Bagnoud Center for Health and Human Rights, and the Harvard Global Health Institute, in collaboration with RAICES.

The study is the first and most comprehensive analysis of the medical records of children as young as six months old and a median age of nine years old detained between June 2018 and October 2020 at Karnes County Family Residential Center in Texas β€” cited by ICE itself as the first detention facility built from the ground up with its civil detention standards in mind. The report documents evidence of mental and physical harm relating to inadequate and inappropriate medical care experienced by children during prolonged detention, including key screenings and management of acute medical and mental health issues.
