Meet Anna Guin, athletic trainer with Atrium Health Floyd
As we continue to highlight our athletic trainers across the Southeast, meet Anna Guin with Atrium Health Floyd supporting Shorter University.
Anna chose athletic training as a career because she loved the sports environment and wanted to work in the medical field. She appreciates the crucial role athletic trainers play as licensed medical professionals and first responders who provide acute emergency care.
Anna’s work as an athletic trainer at Shorter University has allowed her to form bonds with student athletes and coaches and return many athletes to the field after being injured.
“I’ll always remember when one of my softball players got hit in the hand while batting and ended up having a displaced fifth metacarpal fracture. I was there for her every step of the way, from taking her to get X-rays to going to her orthopedic appointments and doing sports-specific rehab. It was the most rewarding feeling when I saw her take the field for the first time after her injury.”

Dr. Kevin Burroughs, sports medicine specialist with Atrium Health Musculoskeletal Institute, discusses concussion management in the wake of pro football injuries. These events emphasize the need for continued education in recognition and reporting of injuries by players, coaches, teammates and parents to assure safe participation in all sports.
👨🏽⚕️It’s important to understand the significance of concussions, concussion management and appropriate recovery.
🏈 Players need to be removed from sports and given appropriate activity modifications to be able to recover and return as quickly and safely as possible.
🧠 Symptoms of a concussion could be as significant as a loss of consciousness, but more routinely will include headache, dizziness, nausea, sensitivity to lights and sounds, confusion or visual problems.
😐 Determining the presence of a concussion can be difficult particularly when the athlete only has mild symptoms and symptoms may not fully present themselves for 24 hours after the initial hit. Reporting your symptoms can help your doctor or other healthcare professionals get you the appropriate treatment.
🧠 A concussion can affect different segments of brain function which is why there is not a one size fits all treatment method for concussion.
🛏️ An individual treatment plan, including designated restrictions to allow the brain to recover, is very important.
