March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. The American Cancer Society estimates that 147,950 people will be diagnosed with colorectal cancer and 53,200 could die from this disease in 2020. Talk to your family today about getting screened.

All surgeons in our group participate in the treatment of colorectal disorders. These diseases which may require surgical treatment include colon cancer and polyps, colonic bleeding, diverticular disease, volvulus (twisting) of the colon, ischemic (gangrenous) colitis, inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s and Ulcerative Colitis), and hemorrhoids. Sometimes the problem may be successfully treated non-surgically. It is common for us to work with a gastroenterologist (intestinal doctor) in treating these diseases. Radiofrequency Ablation is a minimally invasive procedure for the treatment of varicose veins and chronic venous insuffiency (CVI). Performed in our office using just local anesthesia, a tiny burst of radiofrequency energy causes the vein wall to shrink and collapse. The vein is sealed and “closed” when the physician withdraws the catheter. After the diseased vein is sealed shut, the blood is naturally re-routed to healthy veins. Because of the consistent level of heat delivered by the procedure, the patient experiences less bruising and a quicker recovery period than alternative laser energy ablations. Cara Hudson, DO, is the newest addition to the surgical teams at our Fort Mill and Pineville offices. Dr. Hudson completed her surgical residency at the Swedish Medical Center in Denver, Colorado, and is a graduate of the Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine. She provides the full range of general surgical care related to acid reflux disease, gallbladder and biliary disease, GI tract, hernia repairs, hiatal hernia repairs, pancreas disorders, inguinal hernia repairs, skin cancers and/or skin lesions, small intestine disease, stomach disease, and thyroid disease.
