🛏 Reset Sleep and Wake Times
Why: Helps regulate energy and focus during the school day.
How:
• Gradually shift bedtime/wake-up earlier by 15–30 minutes every few days.
• Establish a calming bedtime routine (e.g., bath, books, dim lights, no screens 1 hour before bed).
⏰ Practice the Morning Routine
Why: Reduces stress and builds confidence.
How:
• Do a “dry run” of getting up, dressed, fed, and out the door.
• Use a visual schedule or checklist to promote independence.
🧠 Build Attention and Task Endurance
Why: Improves focus and work completion at school.
How:
• Try short table tasks (puzzles, mazes, worksheets, art).
• Use a timer (start with 5–10 minutes) and praise focus efforts.
👕 Promote Independence with Self-Care
Why: Builds confidence and reduces classroom transitions.
How:
• Let your child practice packing a backpack, opening lunch items, putting on socks/shoes, and buttoning clothing.
• Create a “school station” at home with cubbies, hooks, and bins.
😌 Use Regulation Tools Daily
Why: Helps your child manage big feelings during the school day.
How:
• Practice breathing exercises, stretches, or movement breaks.
• Try “snack + calm” time after high energy play (helps with transitions).
📚 Practice Sitting & Listening
Why: Helps prepare for circle time and classroom directions.
How:
• Read books together and pause to ask questions.
• Use “listening games” like Simon Says or freeze dance.
📦 Visit the School or Drive the Route
Why: Helps reduce anxiety and builds familiarity.
How:
• Walk the halls, meet the teacher if possible.
• Practice drop-off routines and talk through what to expect.
• Use social stories or a picture book about “first day of school.”
