100 years ago today... 17-year-old "Jazz Slayer" Dorothy Ellingson spent the 1st of April being tried for her mother's murder in San Francisco. Her family members blamed jazz and the clubs Dorothy frequented. San Francisco police officers even rounded up local jazz musicians for questioning. Ultimately, Dorothy was convicted and jazz was acquitted.

The phrase of the day is "porcine depredations." The people of Cedar Falls, Iowa had some pretty big fish to fry... or, eh, pigs to pen, we suppose?

If you're assuming this was from an uneventful period in history, you may be surprised that it's actually from an 1862 edition of the Cedar Falls Gazette. But not to worry; this was just a page 3 mention. The front page astutely declared "There is a War."

Cedar Falls Gazette, 12 Sep 1862, p3 and p1, respectively

Don't worry, it won't cause any change in your life, but good luck getting those kids to bed.

The idea of 'spring forward' and 'fall behind' was first signed into law by President Woodrow Wilson on 19 March 1918.

Anyone else enjoy a Sunday afternoon exploring your family tree? Today I am researching ancestors from the area of Magorban civil parish in County Tipperary, Ireland. This particular branch of my family has roots in the tiny countryside townlands of Mobarnane, Ballyvadin, and Fethard. ~Cheers, Melinda
