Over-functioning occurs when lawyers, driven by their natural desire to help, take on excessive responsibility for solving others' problems. This can extend beyond work into personal relationships, where they feel an unconscious need to be needed and may overly identify with the role of fixer or rescuer. Read about it here:

Law practice requires us to subvert our own needs, feelings, and values in order to zealously advocate for our clients. When this crosses the line into unhealthy behavior in our personal lives, we may become preoccupied with meeting the needs of others while ignoring our own needs.

I read an article recently about dying people and what they revealed to caretakers in their final days. None of them ever wished they had spent more time at work. “Imagine every day is Saturday. The week is over, the successes and failures of the week are yesterday, the prospect of another week—stress, demands, egos, self-importance—is days away. Do what you want, where and when you want. Sit back and watch the world go by, or maybe even choose to be part of it. From June 1 to August 31, 2016, that’s exactly what I did.
