In Loving Memory of Mr. Alfred Lee Gabriel

Mr. Alfred Lee Gabriel, of Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, entered into eternal rest on Saturday, August 30, 2025.

Born to the late Rufus and Sarah Gabriel, Alfred was educated in the Mecklenburg County School System. He grew up embraced by family, community, and loveโ€”values that guided the life he lived and the relationships he cherished.

Alfred was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Sherry Derr Gabriel. He was a devoted father to his son, Nykine Kewaun Houston, who brought him immense pride and joy.

He leaves behind a legacy of love and remembrance in the hearts of his sisters, Sarah Jane Thompson (Wardell) and Wanda Gabriel; brothers, Phillip Gabriel, Spencer Gabriel, and Charles Gabriel (Kaye); niece, Portia Thompson; nephews, Shawan Gabriel (Keisha), Richard Thompson, Charles McAfee (Laura), Josh Thompson (Ivanova), and Adrian McAfee; as well as his aunts, Vera Robertson, Hazline Robinson, and Ann Robinson.

With heavy hearts, we share the passing of Wayne N. Patterson Jr., who gained his wings on May 31, 2025. Described by his loved ones as a magnet to people, Wayne was an amazing son, devoted husband, loving father, and cherished friend to many. His presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Celebrating the Life of Roberta McCombs

Roberta McCombs, born in Sherrills Ford, North Carolina, on November 11, 1929, daughter of Margie Belle Rawls-McCombs and Clauzell McCombs, has passed away.

A fierce advocate for civil rights, Roberta dedicated her life to fighting injustice and inequality. She proudly marched for civil rights in the sixties and remained a bold voice for fairness. Roberta embraced life with curiosity, traveling widely and exploring diverse cultures, often sharing fond memories of her journey to Papua New Guinea and the people she encountered there.

We invite family and friends to join us in remembering Roberta and celebrating her remarkable life.

Services will be held on Saturday, April 12, 2025, at Motts Grove United Methodist Church (8790 Sherrills Ford Road, Sherrills Ford, NC 28673):

Mrs. Alfredia Heaggans Blackwell, 94, of Troutman, passed away at her home on Sunday Dec. 1, 2024 surrounded by her family. She was born a twin in the Lundale Community of Logan County West Virginia on June 25th, 1930, and was the daughter of the late Charlie Heaggans and Emma Rankin Heaggans.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son Robert Blackwell; a granddaughter, Tiffany Blackwell and nine brothers, David, John, James, Richard, Preston, Shirley, twin Walter, Sam, and Rufus Heaggans as well as two sisters, Onevva Heaggans and Gladys Stevenson.

Mr. Charles D. Blakeney II, affectionately known as Mann, age 42, son of the late Jamie S. McCall and the late Charles D. Blakeney Sr. Charles D. Blakeney was born on January 26, 1981 in Iredell County. On January 18, 2024 an angel was dispatched from Glory to his Iredell home to es**rt Charles Donell Blakeney to his eternal home.
Mr. Blakeney attended Mooresville Senior High School and graduated with the Class of 2000. Charles was last employed by Fifth Street Ministries of Statesville, NC. He attended CHOICES Outreach Ministries.
Those who shall forever cherish his memory are his sisters, Jamitra B. Coates (Maurice Coates III) of Mooresville, NC, Lashara Little of Mooresville, NC; and his beloved dog Boogie. He also leaves behind his grandmother, Mary McCall Sherrill (David Sherrill); two nieces, Naโ€™Zaria S. Caldwell and Amanti S. Harold Hart, Jr, 86, passed away on December 7, 2023, after eight years of battling dementia at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem, NC. He was born in Shiloh Township, in Iredell County, NC, to the late Hal Hart and Ruth Ramsey Hart on January 11, 1937. Harold was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Hattie Hart Sherrod and Mary Lea Hart, and two brothers, Johnny Hart and Herbert Hart, and his son-in-law, Michael Bowens Sr.

Virginia Carr Sloan was born April 2, 1933 in Huntersville, NC to the late Dewey and Lillie Carr. She departed this life on Wednesday, November 8, 2023.

Virginia was a proud graduate of the class of 1951 at Torrence Lytle School. At an early age, she joined Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church where she enjoyed faithfully serving as an usher and a dedicated member. Virginia was employed by Carmel Country Club and retired after 45 years of service. She loved bowling, playing cards at Betty Rae Center, planting flowers in her yard and spending time with her family.

Virginia was married to the late John Lindsey Sloan Sr. She was preceded in death by two sons: John Lindsey Sloan Jr. and Milton Dewey Sloan Sr., one granddaughter, Mercedes A Sloan, four brothers: Richard Carr, Murray Carr, Harry Carr and William Carr, and three sisters: Ethel Grier, Annie Parks and Betty Carr.

Virginia leaves to cherish her fond memories one daughter Denise Sloan Harvell (Ivy Sr), one son Vernon Fitzgerald Sloan both of Charlotte, NC, one sister Dorothy Jones of Flint Michigan, two daughters-in-law: Torri Sloan and Katie Sloan both of Charlotte, NC, two sisters-in-law: Elizabeth Sloan Bright and Vermell Carr, 7 grandchildren: Antonio Sloan of Dayton, Ohio, Shawan Gabriel (Keisha) of Winston Salem, NC, LaShyondha Clark (Jonathan), Ivy M.
