🚫STOP! DON’T CUT THAT PERINEUM🚫

Episiotomy is a surgical cut intended to widen the va**nal opening. The two most common types of episiotomies are midline (toward the a**s) or medio-lateral (diagonal, away from the a**s). This procedure was originally intended to prevent severe tears and trauma to the perineum during a va**nal birth or to expedite a birth in the case of fetal trauma, or to allow an instrumental (forceps or vacuum) delivery. This practice originated in the 18th century 😱 and it was thought that a surgical cut was better than a natural tear, and that it reduced the chances of incontinence (leaking urine and/or f***s) and improved s*xual function. What does research today tell us about episiotomies? 🤔 Should they be routine? 🤔 What are the risks? 🤔 Is there ever a time when it’s beneficial? 🤔

📌The World Health Organization recommends episiotomy rates of below 10%.
📌A study done in 1983 showed that episiotomies did NOT improve incontinence or s*xual function, but that it actually INCREASED the odds of a woman experiencing BOTH.
📌Episiotomies effect the mother more than the baby
📌It can lead to a traumatic birth experience
📌It can impact mothers quality of life
📌It increases:
➖blood loss
➖chance of infection
➖incontinence
➖recovery time
➖painful in*******se
📌They do not reduce the risk of severe va**nal tearing but rather INCREASE your chances of tearing further
📌Surgeons are accustomed to sewing back together clean, straight cuts made by scalpels. Not a rugged irregular cut. A natural tear follows the lines of tissues which can be sewn back together like a jigsaw puzzle. An episiotomy ignores anatomical structures and borders and disrupts the integrity of muscles, blood vessels, nerves, and other tissues. This is what causes more bleeding, more pain, more incontinence, loss of muscle tone, and discomfort during in*******se.

💚The American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ACOG) changed its stance concerning the procedure, encouraging its members to take more preventative measures, and avoid episiotomy whenever possible💚

✂️Episiotomies should NEVER be used as routine practice, but rather only be used in the rare occurrence of when it’s appropriate, like if your baby's heart rate drops and delivery is expedited by cutting the perineum, if she is being delivered by forceps or vacuum suction, or if her shoulders are too wide to fit through the birth canal✂️

What are preventative measures you can take to reduce tearing🤔
🌸do exercises such as Kegels and squats
🌸have s*x
🌸perineal massage starting at 34 weeks, 3-4 times a week:
➖wash your hands and trim fingernails
➖use almond oil, coconut oil or vitamin e oil
➖take a warm bath or use warm compress to soften the area
➖lay comfortably and relax
➖apply oil to perineum
➖Insert your one or two thumbs about an inch into your va**na (about to your thumb’s knuckle), and put firm but gentle pressure straight down on the perineum. Allow the perineum to stretch for a minute or two. After it stretches for a few minutes, you may be able to get the second thumb in more easily. Slight burning or stretching is OK, but if you experience pain, use more gentle pressure, or stop the massage. Once the perineum has been stretched for a couple of minutes, gently move your thumb up along the sides of the va**na, stretching it from side to side.
🌸during birth, squatting or side-lying positions during pushing, “breathing down” the baby during crowning, as well as the use of hot compresses on the perineum have been shown to reduce the chances of tearing and episiotomy

‼️ACOG AND OTHER ORGANIZATIONS HAVE RECOMMENDED AGAINST ROUTINE EPISIOTOMIES YET WE STILL HAVE PROVIDERS WHO USE IT AS COMMON PRACTICE DURING DELIVERY. YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO REFUSE AN EPISIOTOMY AND SHOULD CONSIDER TALKING ABOUT THIS WITH YOUR PROVIDER BEFORE GIVING BIRTH‼️

🚨 Important Findings Alert! 🚨
New research in JAMA Pediatrics reveals that the Dobbs decision has prevented some women from terminating pregnancies under dire medical conditions. As Alison Gemmill, a perinatal epidemiologist at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, points out, “Prior to these abortion bans, people had the option to terminate if the fetus was found to have a severe congenital anomaly.” This means that without that choice, “those babies would die shortly after birth.”

Let’s stand up for our reproductive rights! 🗳️✨It’s time to make our voices heard. Together, we can fight for policies that protect our rights. Vote like your future depends on it—because it does!

💕💕 BIRTH FACT 💕💕
"Did you know that a normal umbilical cord contains 3 vessels? There are two arteries and one vein...

A lot of people think it’s basically just a “tube” of sorts transporting nutrients to their baby. But...it’s so much more intricately designed than that!

The vein carries oxygenated and nutrient-rich blood to your baby, and the arteries carry the deoxygenated blood, waste products (such as carbon dioxide), and nutrient-depleted blood through the placenta and into your bloodstream to dispose of. This is opposite of how blood is transported everywhere else in the body.

After delivery, these vessels close by themselves. The arteries close first due to their muscular walls. The umbilical vein follows closely behind, allowing oxygenated blood to return to your baby from the placenta.

At birth, the placenta contains 1/3 of your baby’s blood volume. By delaying cord clamping for several minutes, you are allowing that blood to be transferred to your baby where it belongs via the umbilical vein.

Our bodies are amazing! ❤️"

This rapid drop in hormone levels is the biggest change in the shortest amount of time that any human will experience. It's faster than menopause or puberty.
After giving birth it is completely normal feel fatigued, irritated, a decreased s*x drive, depression, anxiety night sweats and everything in between.
Feeling overwhelmed in the fourth trimester, a postpartum doula can help you feel rested, nourished and not so overwhelmed in this life's transition.

PSA to Travelers: be gentle. Parents are trying, and it can be hard traveling with little ones. There is so much unpredictability and added obstacles.

Offer a smile and nod. Offer to hold their drink while they get situated. But most of all, be patient.

Mamas, you got this! Traveling with young ones can be a challenge, but such fun and special memories. Take your time and don't be afraid to ask for any help you may need.
