What is Purim?
Purim is a joyful Jewish holiday that commemorates the events of the Book of Esther. The story takes place in ancient Persia during the reign of King Ahasuerus, when a royal official named Haman plotted to destroy the Jewish people after Mordechai refused to bow to him. With encouragement from her cousin Mordechai, Queen Esther risked her life by approaching the king without being summoned. She revealed her Jewish identity and exposed Haman’s plan, leading to his punishment and allowing the Jewish people to defend themselves and survive. Purim is celebrated on the 14th day of the Hebrew month of Adar, usually in late winter or early spring. The name Purim comes from the word pur, meaning lot, referring to the lots Haman cast to choose the date of the attack. Today, the holiday is marked by reading the Book of Esther in synagogue, dressing in costumes, giving food to friends, donating to those in need, and sharing a festive meal. Purim emphasizes courage, unity, and resilience in the face of danger.
Purim: Finding Light, Courage, and Joy Together
Purim is a celebration of courage, identity, and hope, a reminder that even in uncertain times, bravery and faith can change the story.
As a community counseling center led by one counselor and family life coach, I love the deeper meaning behind this holiday. Purim teaches us:
✨ You can stand up for what is right, even when it feels scary.
✨ Your voice matters.
✨ Joy is powerful medicine.
✨ Community makes resilience stronger.
Costumes remind us that we all wear masks sometimes. In counseling, we gently create space to remove those masks to be seen, heard, and supported as our authentic selves.
The sharing of food and gifts reflects connection. Mental wellness thrives in community, not isolation. When we check on one another, celebrate together, and show kindness, we build emotional strength for families and for our entire community.
This Purim, may we:
• Choose courage over fear
• Choose connection over isolation
• Choose joy, even in small ways
If you or your family need support navigating life’s challenges, know that you don’t have to face them alone. Healing happens in safe, compassionate spaces. Healing happens here 🙏
Wishing you a joyful and meaningful Purim. 💜 scaaccc@gmail.com
