Dr. Rebecca Crumpler
First US Black Female to earn a medical degree.
1831: Dr. Crumpler was born free - Christiana, Delaware.

Attended West Newton English and Classical School.

1852-1860: Practiced Nursing - Massachusetts. Doctors encouraged her to attend medical school and wrote letters of recommendation.

1860: 300 of 54,543 physicians were female, all of whom were white. Rebecca was accepted to - New England Female Medical College (Boston University School of Medicine).

Despite obstacles while in medical school, including: Her scholarship was rescinded during the Civil War * Loosing her first husband to tuberculosis * Attempts to discredit her ability to complete the medical program…
Dr. Rebecca Lee Crumpler prevailed!
1866: Dr. Rebecca Crumpler began her career caring for newly freed slaves, with the Freeman’s Bureau.

This truly examples: ENDURANCE, PERSERVERANCE, and STRENGTH. A woman to honor, hold in high esteem and have pride in the pathway she pathed. A true SHEro to learn about for Woman’s History Month.

Some Facts:
STD Health Equity-Achieved when everyone has an equal chance to be healthy regardless of background. This includes a person’s race, ethnicity, income, gender, religion, sexual identity, and disability.

Research shows higher rates of STDs among some racial or ethnic minority groups compared to whites. These higher rates are not caused by ethnicity or heritage, but by social conditions likely to affect minority groups.

The mission of the Student Health Center is to render efficient, professional, medical services to students and campus community for minor illnesses and injuries on an out-patient basis and to encourage students to be responsible for their health. To provide quality, accessible, confidential and cost sensitive medical care to the unique and diverse needs of the students and the campus community and also to provide health promotion, education, disease and injury prevention specific to student needs and development.
