Trauma isn’t just what happened to you. It’s what happened inside you because of it.

The nervous system doesn’t distinguish between past and present danger. When something reminds your body of an old wound (a smell, a tone of voice, a moment of conflict), it responds as if the threat is happening right now.

Trauma-informed therapy works with your nervous system, not against it. It’s slower, more careful, and more effective than white-knuckling your way through the past.

We live in a culture that treats busyness as a badge of honor. Slowing down can feel irresponsible, even selfish. So most people don’t do it until their body forces them to.

But your nervous system is not designed for constant output. It operates in cycles, activation and recovery, stress and rest. When we skip the recovery phase for long enough, the system starts breaking down in other ways: irritability, difficulty concentrating, physical tension, emotional reactivity, disrupted sleep.

Rest is not a reward you earn after you’ve done enough. It’s a biological requirement, the same way sleep and water are. The research on this is clear: people who build genuine recovery into their days, not just sleep but actual downtime with no productivity attached, show lower cortisol levels, better emotional regulation, and stronger immune function.

Unplugging looks different for everyone. It might be a walk with no podcast. Sitting outside for ten minutes. A meal with no screen. A conversation with no agenda. What matters is that your nervous system gets a genuine signal that it is allowed to rest.
