Have you heard of Lipedema?

We hope you can make it to our chat where we discuss more on Lipedema & Taylor shares a bit of her diagnosis story!

Lipedema is a chronic condition that causes excessive adipose tissue (fat) buildup in the lower body, and can sometimes also affect the lower trunk and arms. It almost exclusively occurs in women.

Some tell tale signs of lipedema are:

>bilateral, symmetrical buildup of fat in the legs and sometimes the arms/lower trunk - resistant to nutrition intervention, exercise, etc.

>sometimes will cause appearance of an ankle or wrist “cuff”

>easy bruising

>can cause pain, tenderness, heaviness in affected areas

>nodular/fibrotic texture beneath the skin creating an uneven/dimpled appearance

Wanting weight loss is pretty natural in a society that villainizes fatness.

Let’s dive deeper> our nervous systems’ job is to constantly scan for threats to our safety & life.

Many of us can feel the very real impact that weight stigma and bias have- they lead to poorer quality healthcare, discrimination, abuse, and even isolation from others.

Since the nervous system wants to protect us from experiencing these things, these feelings can create thoughts in the brain of “I should make myself smaller to avoid these things (which can harm me)”.

Can we blame ourselves?! How wise of our nervous systems to try to protect us!

This is why I say- it’s ok to WANT to lose weight! However, you may notice that focusing on the losing weight doesn’t work for you long term, and that restriction leads to later binging, more stress/anxiety/depressive symptoms, and less joy!

How might it feel to shift from focusing on losing weight to simply focusing on how you feel, and the habits which will help get you there like eating more consistent meals with more variety/fiber, practicing more mindfulness, etc?

I love helping my clients identify certain nutrition/health-related beliefs like this that aren’t serving you so that we can focus on creating habits that are science-backed and truly support how you want to feel. Focusing on how we can feel allows us to stay better attuned to our bodies & & reconnect to their wisdom!

🔎 Search “food pantry meals” on social media apps to get a bunch of ideas for items that are great to donate OR recipes you can make with common food pantry ingredients!

Share your past unrealistic goals below!

Oh, how many unrealistic goals I’d set in the throws of hating my body.

Going from not working out >> I’m going to work out 4-5x/week…

Cutting out sugar completely…

Cooking all of my meals from scratch…

Setting unrealistic short-term goals, or trying to do a complete quick overhaul typically doesn’t last.

What does last is making small, realistic changes whilst practicing self-compassion and accepting that for *most* people, we don’t have the resources (like a personal chef, personal trainer, abundant amounts of free time, etc.) to make the changes we may like. This is what our brain prefers!!

And of course- we have to always acknowledge the role that social determinants of health play in our health & wellbeing, and that it’s not ALL our individual responsibility. We (for the most part) can’t control our genes, the air quality, our trauma hx, etc- all of which impact our health.

Have you heard of Refeeding Syndrome?

While typically associated with restrictive eating disorders, it can occur in ANYONE who is severely malnourished.

It’s something that’s been on my mind every time I discuss the genocide in Gaza with anyone or call my reps.

But how do you tell a people who have been starving to take it SUPER slow with renourishment?

Guidelines for preventing refeeding involve aiming for increasing calories 5-20 kcals/kg body weight/day for 4-7 days—how do we even calculate this without access to scales to get weight? Without exact nutrition facts for foods being consumed?

How do you protect from the repercussions of refeeding syndrome without access to medical care?

It’s unfathomable. Heartbreaking.

We are One Humanity. We have to do better.
End all systems of oppression.
End antisemitism & Islamophobia.

Free Palestine (and all countries facing forced starvation and famine).
