NC MedAssist

NC MedAssist NC MedAssist is a statewide nonprofit pharmacy providing prescription medicine to uninsured, low-income residents at no cost. FOOD OR MEDICINE??

Through our Free Pharmacy Program, OTC Free Store, and Mobile Free Pharmacy events, we are dispensing hope across NC. That is the stark choice that faces more and more members of our own community. As costs of prescription drugs continue to rise and the numbers of uninsured reach all time highs, providing a no cost source for life-saving prescription drugs becomes critical. NC MedAssist exists to provide free medications to the uninsured by qualifying patients for patient assistance programs offered by pharmaceutical companies and dispensing them directly to patients. Over the past 12 years, NC MedAssist has dispensed over $30 million in free prescription medicines to over 15,000 low-income residents. In Mecklenburg County, NC MedAssist serves as a Community Pharmacy dispensing free prescription medication to our neighbors who are uninsured. Residents of the county can qualify for our services if they are at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Level. At our two locations in Charlotte, we do not have doctors on staff so you must have a prescription slip written by a doctor to apply. If you believe that you may be eligible for help with your prescription medication, please call us at 704-536-1790. We can screen you on the phone to let you know how we may be able to assist you. We also serve as the Central Fill Pharmacy for North Carolina's Free Clinics. Patients access our services through the physicians, physician assistants and nurse practitioners that serve these clinics across the state.

In 2024, data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimated there were 80,391 drug overdose deaths in the United States. Overdose deaths from opioids – mainly fentanyl – account for almost 68 per cent of all overdose fatalities.

Today, we join others around the world in recognizing International Overdose Awareness Day (August 31)—a time to remember those we’ve lost, support those struggling with addiction, and raise awareness for prevention.

At NC MedAssist, bridging the gap to medication access is at the heart of our mission. That’s why we provide naloxone — an over-the-counter nasal spray that can reverse overdose — at no cost to residents of North Carolina. This product is available in our Free OTC Store and at Mobile Free Pharmacy events across North Carolina.

Overdose does not discriminate, and prevention is possible. Call, email, or stop by to learn more about obtaining free naloxone.

Behind every prescription is a neighbor who can live healthier thanks to access to medications. Thanks to a $10,000 grant from the Community Foundation of Burke County, 333 North Carolinians are able to rest easier knowing they don’t have to choose between their medication and their basic needs.

We’re incredibly grateful for the support of the Foundation of Burke County and their investment in our mission to dispense hope across North Carolina.

Health insurance premiums in NC could rise by as much as 36% next year. For some, that may mean insurance becoming unaffordable and causing them to lose coverage altogether.

NC MedAssist is here to help fill the gap. Uninsured North Carolinians with an income below 300% of the federal poverty level can enroll in our Free Pharmacy Program to receive their prescription medication at no cost.

What's more: ANY North Carolina resident, regardless of income or insurance status, can take advantage of our Free OTC Store and Mobile Free Pharmacy events to help alleviate the cost of everyday over-the-counter healthcare.

At NC MedAssist, we envision a North Carolina in which no one has to choose between affording their medication or their basic needs, like food, housing, or transportation.

When rising costs put medication access out of reach, we're here to make sure no one is left behind.

The sunsetting of ACA tax credits and rate hike requests from health insurers could produce sticker shock and lead to fewer insured in NC.

Our Chief Program Officer, Nicole Stanfield, MHA, and Director of the Mobile Free Pharmacy Program, Lisa Szabo, attended the Mobile Health Leadership Summit in Greensboro, where they met Dr. Mandy Cohen — former NC Secretary of Health and Human Services and 20th Director of the CDC.

A true champion for expanding health access in North Carolina, Dr. Cohen continues to inspire our team and the work we do every day. We’re thrilled Nicole and Lisa had the chance to connect with her! 💙
