NC MedAssist

NC MedAssist NC MedAssist is a statewide nonprofit pharmacy providing prescription medicine to uninsured, low-income residents at no cost. FOOD OR MEDICINE??

Through our Free Pharmacy Program, OTC Free Store, and Mobile Free Pharmacy events, we are dispensing hope across NC. That is the stark choice that faces more and more members of our own community. As costs of prescription drugs continue to rise and the numbers of uninsured reach all time highs, providing a no cost source for life-saving prescription drugs becomes critical. NC MedAssist exists to provide free medications to the uninsured by qualifying patients for patient assistance programs offered by pharmaceutical companies and dispensing them directly to patients. Over the past 12 years, NC MedAssist has dispensed over $30 million in free prescription medicines to over 15,000 low-income residents. In Mecklenburg County, NC MedAssist serves as a Community Pharmacy dispensing free prescription medication to our neighbors who are uninsured. Residents of the county can qualify for our services if they are at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Level. At our two locations in Charlotte, we do not have doctors on staff so you must have a prescription slip written by a doctor to apply. If you believe that you may be eligible for help with your prescription medication, please call us at 704-536-1790. We can screen you on the phone to let you know how we may be able to assist you. We also serve as the Central Fill Pharmacy for North Carolina's Free Clinics. Patients access our services through the physicians, physician assistants and nurse practitioners that serve these clinics across the state.

As the year comes to a close, your generosity can still make a life-saving difference.

When Jason R. came to NC MedAssist, he was uninsured and struggling with severe depression, anxiety, diabetes, and hypertension. Without access to his medications, his health had reached a critical point.

“I was very near death,” Jason shared.

Through a local clinic, Jason connected with NC MedAssist and began receiving the medications he needed. With consistent access to care, he started rebuilding his health—step by step.

Stories like Jason’s are possible because of compassionate donors who believe access to medication shouldn’t depend on income or insurance status.

December 31 is the final day to make a 2025 tax-deductible donation. Your year-end gift helps ensure more neighbors across North Carolina receive the life-saving medications they need.

From all of us at NC MedAssist, we wish you a season filled with peace, comfort, and good health.

"It'd be a wonder if I'm alive if I didn't have MedAssist."

Across North Carolina, far too many people face impossible choices every day:
• Fill a prescription or pay the electric bill
• Buy an inhaler or feed their family
• Life-saving medication or gas to get to work

Cathy from Lexington faced these choices for years. As the caretaker for her elderly father, she struggled to manage her COPD without insurance—often relying on leftover inhalers from her sister just to get by. Before she became eligible for Medicaid earlier this year, NC MedAssist made sure she had access to her medication at no cost.

Her story reflects what so many of our neighbors experience every day.

A gift of $261 — or $21.75 a month — provides an entire year of prescriptions for one North Carolinian who can’t afford their medication.

This giving season, you can help ensure families like Cathy’s don’t have to choose between their health and their basic needs.

Thank you WBTV News for highlighting our work in the recent story on the rise of ACA premiums across North Carolina. Many individuals and families are facing an impossible choice: pay more than they can afford or go without health insurance in the new year. As more people lose coverage, NC MedAssist and our partners are here to provide free healthcare access.

This Giving Tuesday, you can help sustain NC MedAssist programs that make it possible for uninsured NC residents to obtain their medication at no cost to them. Visit medassist.org to sign up to volunteer or give.

Today, on Giving Tuesday, we’re celebrating the incredible community that stands beside us. Thanks to our supporters, thousands of uninsured neighbors have been able to access the medications they rely on to stay well. Still, the need for support remains.

There are so many ways to make an impact—volunteering at an event, offering your expertise, or making a gift that helps someone receive the medications they need.

Whichever path you choose, your support helps us extend hope and health across our state.

Did you know North Carolina has the second largest rural population in the US?

Rural communities face some of the biggest barriers to medication access — long drives, limited pharmacy options, and fewer local resources.

On National Rural Health Day, we’re honoring our rural neighbors by continuing to meet them where they are.

Last year:
• 22% of our Free Pharmacy patients came from rural counties
• We dispensed 21,000+ prescriptions to them ($7.6M in value)
• Half of our Mobile Free Pharmacy events served rural communities

While we’ve made progress, many rural residents still face obstacles to getting the medications they need. Together, we can keep working to ensure no one has to go without their medication simply because of where they live.
