Let's thrive!
Doug, an Atrium Health patient, credits the care he received from the Care Everywhere mobile medicine unit for saving his life.
āWhen you're working in the heat, if you take a break, you get your second wind, but the second wind never came,ā Doug shares. āIt was the [mobile] medical unit where I found out, my āblood pressure is through the roof, like, dangerously high.' That was the first stage of finding out what was going on with me.ā
Care Everywhere providers diagnosed Doug with hypertension, kidney stones and Type 2 diabetes.
"I feel like if I wouldn't have gone to that bus that day, there's a good chance I wouldn't be alive because I didn't have a doctor to go to."
Within a week following his visit with our Care Everywhere providers, Doug was able to schedule appointments with specialists to get the care he needed.
Atrium Healthās Care Everywhere mobile family medicine units provide state-of-the-art health care services to the diverse communities we serve.

Heroism takes off at the Charlotte Douglas Airport āļø
Shortly before boarding his connecting flight at Charlotte Douglas Airport, Ken Jeffries had a cardiac episode.
Claire Cerbie, a former Atrium Health Sanger Heart & Vascular Institute nurse was boarding the same flight when she noticed Ken exhibiting signs of a heart attack. Her quick thinking and immediate action, including performing CPR and using an AED, brought Ken back to a stable condition as they waited for additional medical support to arrive.
Ken was then treated at Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center by interventional cardiologist Dr. William Downey. "Most people who this happens to die,ā Downey said. āThis is sudden death. Claire's CPR kept him alive.ā
āA āthank youā is not enough. I am so appreciative and indebted to you,ā Ken said as he spoke to Claire over a zoom.
Since receiving cardiac care from the team at Atrium Health Sanger Heart & Vascular Institute, Ken has been able to recover and is a strong advocate for CPR and AED availability and training.
Kenās heartfelt gratitude for Claire is a powerful reminder of the impact of quick action and CPR training.

š§¢ Opt for light colors, loose-fitting, and sweat-wicking fabrics. Don't forget a hat and sunscreen to protect against the sun's rays.

For Kimberly Giammarco, life changed in the blink of an eye.
Kimberly went to the eye doctor thinking she needed glasses, but within a matter of days she learned a benign tumor was causing her vision problems.
Her doctors scheduled her for Gamma Knife Radiosurgery right away. This is a procedure that uses highly focused beams of radiation to target brain tumors.
During the procedure, you wear a tight-fitting mask and lie very still on a bed that slides into a machine. The thought of it all made Kimberly nervous, so she turned to live music therapy during the process to help her feel relaxed. She went through five sessions listening to live renditions of chart-topping hits.
Now, her treatment is complete, and her vision is back to normal!

Hereās a Duck to Remember Us
Among the lifesaving machines and medicines at Atrium Health Levine Cancer Institute Union, a facility of Carolinas Medical Center, thereās perhaps, something far more meaningful to the patients and providers there ā rubber ducks.
It all started about a decade ago, with a friendly gesture from a blanket vendor, who gifted the nurses a few rubber ducks and they decided to put them on display. In 2016, that gesture sparked a new tradition when a breast cancer patient, Jessica Conklin, finished her treatment and gave the staff a rubber flamingo to say, "thank you.ā Thatās when the team at Levine Cancer Institute Union decided that would become their trademark. From then on, they gave patients a personalized duck ā something specific to their story or fight. Now, hundreds of ducks line the shelves of the facility. Itās a constant reminder of Levine Cancer Institute Unionās commitment to their patients and the influence the staff continues to have on their lives, long after they receive treatment.

"This is an exciting day for our team and our patients," shares Dr. Michael Rinaldi, an interventional cardiologist and the medical director of the structural heart program at Atrium Health Sanger Heart & Vascular Institute. "We have been eagerly anticipating the opportunity to bring this innovative technology to our community. The tricuspid clip offers a life-changing option for patients who previously had limited treatment choices.ā
We are thrilled to announce a major milestone in cardiac careāthe successful completion of the first commercial tricuspid clip procedure in the Carolinas at Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center.
This minimally invasive procedure represents a significant advancement in the treatment of tricuspid regurgitation, a condition where the heartās tricuspid valve does not close tightly, allowing blood to flow backward in the heart causing symptoms like severe shortness of breath and swelling.
Thanks to the FDA-approved TriClip device, our team can offer a life-changing solution to patients who are not suitable candidates for traditional surgery. This procedure is simpler, involves less risk, and patients typically return home the next day ā significantly enhancing their quality of life with minimal recovery time.
Weāre proud to continue leading the way in innovative #CardiacCare.
