Since childhood, Dr. Joseph Hsu knew he wanted to serve others through medicine. At 17, he enrolled at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, double majoring in pre-med and nuclear engineering.

His military career included a deployment to Iraq in 2006 — one of the war’s most violent periods with high casualty rates. “I was fully trained formally, but the learning and training were just beginning,” he said. “No amount of civilian experience prepares you for what happens in war. Some of these things you carry with you forever. They’re transformative — they push you to innovate and develop new techniques. The rehab protocols and pathways now used in civilian care were born out of caring for wounded warriors.”

Today, Dr. Hsu serves as vice chair of quality for the Atrium Health Musculoskeletal Institute in Charlotte, North Carolina. He leads initiatives that strengthen partnerships with the military and support veterans across the health system.

He says it’s no surprise that veterans often excel in health care leadership roles. “Military veterans are servant leaders — it’s part of our culture,” Dr. Hsu shared. “Leadership isn’t about privilege. It’s about service — making sure your team has what it needs to succeed.”

As health care continues to evolve, Dr. Hsu believes veterans are uniquely equipped to thrive. “Military veterans are comfortable with change,” he said. “That’s why they do so well in organizations that are growing and transforming.”

Thank you to our veteran teammates—for your service, your strength and the stories that continue to inspire us every day.

About a dozen years ago, Dr. Kevin Lobdell, system director of Atrium Health Sanger Heart & Vascular Institute in Charlotte, North Carolina, received a call that would change the course of his career.

One of his patients had suffered a heart episode on the golf course. After surgery, the patient recovered well — until a second emergency struck. His wife called Dr. Lobdell again, this time about dangerous blood pressure issues. The patient recovered, but the experience sparked an idea: what if patients could track their own health at home?

In 2018, Dr. Lobdell helped secure a $1.1 million grant from The Duke Endowment to expand patient education and remote telemonitoring. Since then, more than 3,200 patients have enrolled — and counting.

That same passion for innovation led Dr. Lobdell to join the Army Reserves in 2020, focusing on remote monitoring technologies for soldiers in the field. With wearable devices that track vital signs, medics can respond faster and more effectively when someone is injured.

In 2024, he was selected as the physician from Army Reserve Medical Command to augment the Office of the Command Surgeon during a Europe-wide simulated war exercise — further blending his civilian and military expertise.

Inspired by his father’s service, Dr. Lobdell was commissioned in a virtual ceremony led by retired Gen. Stanley McChrystal, with his father watching proudly. Advocate Health CEO Eugene Woods later gifted a charcoal portrait of the moment — now hanging in Dr. Lobdell’s office.

“Atrium Health and the Army have both given me opportunities to serve others,” he said. “It’s the meaning of life.”

Thank you to our veteran teammates—for your service, your strength and the stories that continue to inspire us every day.

In the fall of 2023, Chelsea was focused on what every college freshman should be: adjusting to life away from home, meeting new friends, and of course – her education. But a sharp, shooting pain in her arm became her body’s alarm bell that something wasn’t right.

A scan soon confirmed Chelsea had stage III Hodgkin lymphoma, a cancer of the lymphatic system that affects the body’s ability to fight infection. Chelsea says her family was in shock, and she didn’t even have time to process it herself – she just knew she had to fight. With the support of her care team at Atrium Health Levine Cancer, her doctors developed a treatment plan that allowed Chelsea to be able to continue classes at UNC Charlotte. “I had a really good support system,” says Chelsea. “My relationship with God, my family and friends, Dr. Soni, and nurse Paige. My parents didn’t miss a single chemo infusion. And my friends took really good care of me when my parents couldn’t be in Charlotte.”

Chelsea recently served as an honorary captain at the Carolina Panthers Crucial Catch game. For her jersey, Chelsea chose the word “Joyful”- a reflection of the positivity she carried throughout her fight. Now, Chelsea is in remission and focused on finishing her degree, getting her dream job in sports analytics and living life to the fullest.
