A plan can be sketched out and refined in just hours or spread out over days or weeks. But the process is essential because it determines what you will have to do to be effective. Too many people make the mistake of spending virtually no time on designing because they are preoccupied with ex*****on. Remember: Designing precedes doing!

Too many people hold themselves back out of fear. Remember, don’t work to remove the fear to do the things, do things and the fear will disappear.

What are the implications for focus, creativity, productivity, and mindfulness from:

"A new study from psychologists at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario reports observations of the transition from one thought to another in fMRI brain scans. Though the researchers didn't detect the content of our thoughts, their method allowed them to count each one. Referred to as "thought worms," the team says that the average human has 6,200 thoughts per day. "What we call 'thought worms' are adjacent points in a simplified representation of activity patterns in the brain," said senior study author Jordan Poppenk.

"The brain occupies a different point in this 'state space' at every moment. When a person moves onto a new thought, they create a new thought worm that we can detect with our methods." While we average 6,200 thought worms a day, Poppenk anticipates further research tracking the manner in which the number of daily thoughts an individual has may change over the course of a lifetime. Likewise, he's interested in investigating potential associations between how quickly a person jumps from one thought to another and other mental and personality traits."

Some clients, those who were adamant that WFH would not work for them, for all sorts of "reasons", have, since Covid-19, have conceded that, surprise surprise...people can be relied on to do work at home, collaboration does work with remote colleagues, productivity does not tank, and many other myths, gone.
And then there is the benefit for the business owners, a chunk of costs are externalized to employees, things like utilities, office supplies like coffee, Friday pizzas, toilet paper and so on.
Will we go back to offices? I say, for sure, but for different reasons than the default, " we have to work in an office."

What the WFH boom means for the future.

Useful insights, especially as most of us are experiencing heightened stress. Engaging in a meditation practice is proven to reduce stress.

Stress isn't always a bad thing; it can be handy for a burst of extra energy and focus, like when you're playing a competitive sport or have to speak in public. But when it's continuous, it actually begins to change your brain. Madhumita Murgia shows how chronic stress can affect brain size, its str...

If you can, take out the politics that may be in this, and just notice how hard it is to be with facts that don't fit your view of reality.
Or as Carol Dweck would put it, notice the areas where you have a fixed mindset. You know, instances where you are being, my mind is made up, don't confuse me with the facts.

Whether in situations relating to scientific consensus, economic history or current political events, denialism has its roots in what psychologists call 'motivated reasoning.'

If we are to succeed in creating social change we need to wake up to the role that Big Business plays in shaping the structures that constrain efforts at equality, for example racial, economic and gender equality.

Millions of dollars are spent every election by corporations that want to influence state regulations and policies, and that's likely to continue in the upcoming election.

As someone committed to helping leaders create more people-centric high-performing organizations, I am thrilled to hear Tina Brown speak up for the role of women. She is right. We need more women's voices shaping how our organizations work . We have the evidence, when women are leading organizations most performance metric are better.
We also have the evidence in the global response to Covid-19 women's leaders are being the most effective.

Here's how corporations can bring women out from the "leadership pipeline" and into actual leadership.

WFH may have leaders realize that people can be trusted to work collaboratively and effectively without constant supervision. It is not hard to "get" that autonomous decision-making is essential for distributed leadership. "Who should I ask?" is best replaced with, "just use your best intelligence and decide". Even with Covid-19, and children home from closed schools, working in lock down conditions, people are demonstrating their creativity, resilience and commitment to contribute. There is no going back. This freedom will not be easily stuffed back into an office cubicle with a supervising second guessing boss.

What managers can learn from the coronavirus outbreak.
