We’re incredibly grateful to partner alongside local universities each semester to have graduate-level interns join our KinderMourn team. Our graduate-level interns manage their own caseloads, help facilitate support groups, and play a huge role in our day-to-day operations, assisting with answering the phones, restocking snacks for clients, and researching integral resources and grants in our community. They are supervised by our Executive Director and also have the opportunity to be mentored by our entire clinical staff.

All of the interns are in master’s-level counseling programs, such as Master’s of Social Work, Clinical Mental Health Counseling, Marriage & Family Therapy, or Psychology programs. Similar to those working towards healthcare positions, such as doctors completing their residency or nursing students completing their clinicals, internships in clinical settings are a significant part of the training and requirements needed for mental health clinicians to graduate with a master’s degree and ultimately work towards gaining their full licensure.

We truly could not serve as many KinderMourn families without their help, so we want to take a moment to highlight the incredible interns who are part of our team for the 2025-2026 school year. We are so lucky to have their support over the next year, so please join us in welcoming them to our KinderMourn team!

KinderMourn is excited to share about a recent partnership with UNC Charlotte to expand our services to reach Spanish speaking families in our community. Through a new Graduate Assistant position, we have a multilingual Clinical Psychology PhD student who can provide 1:1 counseling and grief support groups to ensure our services are as accessible as possible, furthering our reach to support more Hispanic and Latin American families in the Charlotte metropolitan area.

Kimberly started with us in July and will be a part of the KinderMourn team for at least the next year as we continue to build out this program. Not only is she providing our grief counseling services in Spanish, but she’s helping translate KinderMourn documents and key grief-related resources, as well as helping the team with research and grant writing. We are so incredibly grateful and excited to have her with us!

Our Grieving Parent support groups are intended for parents who have experienced the death of a child, no matter the age or type of loss. In our Grieving Parent support groups your sorrow is honored, your story is welcomed, and your child is remembered. Our hope is to create a space where grieving parents can openly express themselves, connect with one another, say their child’s name, and know that while what they are experiencing is unimaginable to most, the members in their group “get it.”

Due to high need, there are several groups that meet on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings. Groups meet for 8 consecutive weeks and are co-facilitated by masters-level trained mental health clinicians.

If you have not received services from KinderMourn before and would like to join, please call our main line at 704-376-2580. Registration is required; however, like all of our support groups, participation is free of charge.

For more information about our group or to register, please contact Lauren at lauren@kindermourn.org.

KinderMourn is such a special place, and we want to shine a light on the people who help make it a safe haven for so many. This summer, we are reintroducing our amazing KinderMourn team and asking them to share a grief resource or ways they are navigating grief in this season.

Today, we are highlighting our Executive Director, Kaela O’Donnell. Kaela has been an integral part of our KinderMourn team since she started as a contract facilitator in 2019. After joining the KinderMourn team full-time in 2020, she’s worked as a Program Therapist, the Children & Teen Program Director, and the Clinical Director before being promoted to Executive Director in November of 2024. As KinderMourn’s Executive Director, she is responsible for leading the organization, overseeing all operations, including budget and finances, clinical programming, program development, and the KinderMourn team, interns, and contract facilitators. Kaela also works closely alongside the board to ensure the financial health of our organization, strengthen partnerships and donor relations, and implement strategic plans that align with our mission.

We asked Kaela to share ways that she connects to grief and resources she’s shared with her clients over the years, and she recommended the podcast “All There Is” with Anderson Cooper. She also recommended the book “When Things Fall Apart: Heart Advice for Difficult Times” by Pema Chödrön and “What’s Your Grief,” which provides all kinds of grief resources via Instagram and their website.

Today is International Overdose Awareness Day (IOAD). IOAD is the world’s largest annual campaign to end overdose, remember without stigma those who have died from overdose, and acknowledge the grief of the family and loved ones left behind.

KinderMourn works alongside hundreds of grieving families who’ve experienced the death of a loved one due to overdose, fentanyl poisoning, or other substance use-related conditions. Over the years, we’ve seen how the stigma and misjudgment these families oftentimes face creates further isolation and additional barriers when seeking support in their grief.

Today, we wear IOAD t-shirts to honor our KinderMourn families, remember their loved ones, and raise awareness regarding the misconceptions and stigma of substance use and overdose related deaths. We come together as one united family and join the community driven by hope.

KinderMourn is such a special place, and we want to shine a light on the people who help make it a safe haven for so many. This summer, we are reintroducing our amazing KinderMourn team and asking them to share a grief resource or ways they are navigating grief in this season.

Today, we are highlighting our Community Relations Director, Staci Brown. Staci has been an integral part of our KinderMourn Team since July 2023. As our Community Relations Director, Staci wears many hats, including managing our marketing, communications, development, and community relations. She also plans all of our KinderMourn events, including our Hope Floats Duck Race and Tee Off for Hope Golf Tournament.

KinderMourn holds a special place in her heart as she connected with KinderMourn in 2017 as a grieving parent after the loss of her daughter, Hayden.

We asked Staci to share ways that she connects to grief, and she shared with us that she loves to honor her daughter by giving back to her community, whether it is by donating baby blankets to Levine Children’s Hospital, volunteering, or forming a Duck Race Team with her family and friends. She also enjoys reading and resonates with the many grief books that we have in-house in our KinderMourn library, including “Shattered: Surviving the Loss of a Child” by Gary Roe or “I Will Carry You” by Angie Smith.

This week’s wishlist features books we would love to have in our library at the KinderMourn home. The books in our library are a vital resource for our Empty Arms Program, Grieving Parents, Grieving Children and all of our KinderMourn clients.

KinderMourn is such a special place, and we want to shine a light on the people who help make it a safe haven for so many. This summer, we are reintroducing our amazing KinderMourn team and asking them to share a grief resource or ways they are navigating grief in this season.

Today, we are highlighting one of our Program Therapists, Lauren Falduti. Lauren has been an integral part of our KinderMourn Team since she started as an intern in 2021. She joined our KinderMourn team full-time in 2022. As a licensed therapist and a Certified Child Life Specialist, she is one of our play therapists for our youngest clients but also provides counseling to grieving teens and grieving parents.

Lauren co-facilitates both our Empty Arms group for perinatal loss and a Wednesday night grieving parents group here at the KinderMourn house.

We asked Lauren to share ways that she connects to grief and resources she shares with her clients, and she gave quite the recommendations. She loves podcasts and for those navigating perinatal loss, she recommended “As Long as I’m Living” by Judith and Alina and “At a Total Loss” by Katherine Lazar. For parents and caregivers supporting grieving children, Lauren recommends this specific episode of Dr. Becky Kennedy’s podcast: “Good Inside: How to Talk About Death With Your Kids” (linked in stories) and the book “I Love You Rituals” by Dr. Becky Bailey to help grieving children and their caregivers navigate secure attachment and co-regulation.

International Overdose Awareness Day is next Sunday, August 31st. KinderMourn will be recognizing this day as a team next Thursday, August 28th, by offering free grief remembrance kits to clients and any community members who may know someone and/or have been directly impacted by overdose or another substance use-related loss. These grief remembrance kits will include materials to make a lantern memorializing loved ones who’ve died, “hope” rocks, specialized overdose awareness stickers, and more.

We will also be handing out free Narcan in an effort to continue building awareness around overdose and equipping our community with the tools needed to keep our loved ones safe.
