When I was first attending births in 1984, the obstetric model was to cut the umbilical cord immediately after birth and take the baby away for evaluation and a first bath. This was based on the belief that placental blood flow would increase birth complications for babies.

Even back then, we midwives knew to do it differently - we waited until the placenta stopped pulsating - 10 or more minutes -- before clamping and cutting the cord. Baby’s did great, placentas came out readily, and all was good - even if our methods were considered silly by doctors.

Times change, science has caught up. The midwives were right. We now know that immediate cord cutting, unless there’s a medical emergency that requires it, is not recommended. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists now recommends a delay in umbilical cord clamping for at least 30–60 seconds, and the WHO recommends 2-3 minutes.

The benefits of waiting include:
❣️ Transfer to baby immunoglobulins and stem cells, essential for tissue and organ repair
❣️ Extra iron, which has been shown to prevent iron deficiency in the first year of life
❣️ Possibly reduced risk of hemorrhage and easier placental delivery for mom

While jaundice can develop from delayed cord cutting due to this influx of blood, this type of jaundice is not usually a medical problem. Baby will naturally clear this excess iron with pooping. Your midwife or pediatrician will keep an eye on baby over the first few days to make sure it’s clearing. However, the benefits of delayed cord cutting are more beneficial for baby than the risk of this jaundice.

Unfortunately, immediate cord clamping/cutting are still common practice in hospitals. You have to let your midwife or doctor know that you want to wait, with baby tummy to tummy on you, while you do. I recommend bringing this up with your care provider in advance to ensure that they are on board to do ‘delayed cord clamping and cutting’. As a midwife x over 35 years now and a mom of 4 kiddos ages 27 to 36, and a grandma of two littles, this post shares one of the truest truths I know: we do not make or break our children. They come with their own stories and journeys and our job is to be there with wisdom, love, understanding, and resilience to support them on that journey for a lifetime.

So yes - all the things- home birth, extended breastfeeding, deeply connected parenting, co-sleeping, homeschooling- whatever of it you choose- do it because it’s right for you and your child, because you love it, and because it works for you- not to cultivate a perfect person or to overcompensate for trauma you may have had. Pay attention to what each child needs because that’s different for each, too. I promise I’ve worked with families who did all the things and no there’s no perfect recipe for the ever happy ever healthy child or adult. Life is more complex than that.

And if your kids do have health challenges, need that antibiotic you worked so hard to avoid to help them have a healthy gut, breastfeeding doesn’t go as planned and you need to use a bottle and formula, you need to have a cesarean- it’s all okay. It’s life’s journey. It’s not your failing and littles are so resilient.

I’ve midwifed so many mamas going crazy trying to get it so right, trying to avoid recreating traumas or protecting our kids from so much of modern living. Yes let’s nourish snd protect our littles and our teens and our adult children of course. But also find the inner peace that you are doing your best and it not only doesn’t have to be perfect- it won’t be.

Allowing ourselves this grace makes the journey easier, more joyous, and allows us to see our children for who they are and what they need rather than just as products of what we do. It allows us to parent more authentically and vulnerably and be more in the intuitive moment.

And it allows us to truly see our children in their fullness and gives the@ permission also, not to be perfect, but instead to be self-loving, resilient humans who understand that we are all humans doing our best and not perfect beings.

Be easier on yourself, mama. Every single day.

Shame on our government.

Repost from .ly

"This was two weeks postpartum, a few hours before I spiked a 105 fever and nearly fell unconscious home alone with two babies.

I was alone because Chris was out of paid leave and had gone back to work. Luckily I called a friend to get me to the hospital before I passed out.

I had retained placenta from Nicholas’ birth and got a massive infection. I was hospitalized for 1 week and then sent home with IV antibiotics for a week after that.

So at 4 weeks postpartum, I was sick as a dog, with an IV in, nursing two babies.

I was in no shape to put on some pants, hand over my infant to strangers, and head into the office.

And yet that is what American women do every day.

Childbirth is no joke. Recovery is no joke. Paid leave is not a vacation.

We are sending women bleeding, swollen, in stitches, in agony back to offices across this country.

We are sending infants to exorbitantly expensive, overworked, understaffed childcare centers.

We are the wealthiest nation in the world. American billionaires added more than $1 trillion to their wealth during the pandemic, and we STILL can’t pass paid leave.

We have the money. We don’t have the willpower. We don’t have enough moms in Congress.

We have the WORST maternal mortality rate in the industrialized world and we are the only country other than Papua New Guinea without paid leave.

Our policies are made by men for men.

We need to elect moms and change the country!"

Did you use inversions to help get your baby into an optimal position or did you use inversions during your birthing time?

Here's a little inside peek at what we're doing when we invert. Those orange, purple, and turquoise arrows show how ligaments in the pelvis are gently stretched and softened by reversing the pull of gravity. This makes more space in your pelvis in a balanced way!
