A new year is here, and with it comes a new chapter of one of our favorite traditions — the Communication Counts 5K.

Each year, we host this race to raise awareness and support our mission at Charlotte Speech and Hearing Center: providing access to superior speech-language and hearing services for individuals of all ages, regardless of income or barriers to care.

A special thank you to Arin Cotel-Altman for covering this important story and working closely with our team, and to Maggie Patterson, one of our amazing parents, for courageously sharing her family’s journey.

Children born during the pandemic—often called “COVID kindergartners”—are now in school, and many are facing speech and language challenges. At CSHC, we’re committed to helping every child find their voice.

In 2025, 35% of local kids failed speech screenings, compared to 20% before the pandemic—a 15% increase in just five years. Early intervention matters, and we’re here to make sure every child has the support they need.
