Helen Irene Peters

Helen Irene Peters was born November 11, 1934 to Cary & Flossie (Allman) Peters at Harrison, MI. She was the third youngest in a family of nine. Helen quietly passed away in the early morning hours of Christmas Eve, December 24, 2025, at Maple View Retirement Community, reaching the age of 91 years.

In Helen’s growing up years, she attended the one room Amble School, right across the fence from their house. Helen completed her high school education with American School Correspondence Courses, going on to become a registered nurse aide. In 1966, Helen had a six-month term of voluntary service at Gallup Child Care home, where she made many lifelong friends. Early in her work career, she also worked a variety of jobs, including making crates and pallets at Peters Crate Works (where the family says no one could make crates & pallets by hand faster than Aunt Helen), helping on the family dairy farm, and at a bakery. Helen found her calling in health care, where she diligently worked as a nurse aide for many years, mostly working the night shift. She retired from Michigan Masonic Home in Alma, MI in 1999.

Family was very special to Helen, and with her love of travel, we have many special memories of her visits. Birthdays were also very important to her, and we remember the many birthday cards that she sent us on our special day. Another highlight of her life was the opportunity to live with “Auntie” Elizabeth Gable for several years after her retirement, helping care for “Auntie” and keeping her in her home.

Helen and her sister Edna were very close, doing many things together. They shared the same yard for many years, and eventually moved into Maple View at nearly the same time, where they spent many hours together. Helen was left very lonely after the passing of Edna three months ago, and often expressed a desire to go and be reunited with her in Heaven.

Helen committed her life to God, and was baptized into the Church of God In Christ, Mennonite, by Minister H.B. Mininger on December 23, 1949, at Harrison, MI. Helen suffered much pain in her earthly life, but through it all her focus and concern was on her family & friends, especially their spiritual welfare. She was very accepting of the things that came her way in life, and we are left with a clear testimony and a thankfulness that Aunt Helen is in a place of peace and rest, where there is no more pain and suffering.

Helen is survived by one sister, Donna (Kurt) Fellows of Alma, MI; one sister-in-law, Ellyn Peters of Ithaca, MI; four generations of beloved nieces & nephews (they are all sure that they were Auntie Helen’s favorite); faithful friends, Jeff and Jenny Benesh; and many relatives & friends.

She is pre-deceased by her parents; five brothers, Herbert, Orval, Willard, Earl, & Wayne; two sisters, Hazel Holdeman, and Edna; one brother-in-law, Paul Holdeman; and three sisters-in-law, Vada, Leona, & Mary.

The family especially wishes to express their gratitude and thanks to the caregivers at Maple View for their compassionate and tender care, especially in the last week of her life.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, at 10:30 A.M. at the Newark Mennonite Church, 3446 S. Alger Rd., Ithaca, Michigan, with Ministers Michael Litwiller, Darin Litwiller, and Douglas Salsbury officiating. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, December 29, 2025, from 2 P.M. to 5 P.M. in the chapel at the Maple View Retirement Community, 4396 S. Luce Road, Ithaca, MI 48847. Burial will take place following the funeral service at 3 P.M. at the Hamilton Cedar Crest Cemetery, 4980 N. Rogers Ave, Harrison, MI 48625.

Those desiring may make contributions in Helen’s memory to the Maple View Retirement Community, 4396 S. Luce Road, Ithaca, MI 48847.

Dean Merrit Shrontz

Dean Merrit Shrontz, 86 of Olivet, Michigan passed away peacefully with the Lord present, December 16, 2025.

Dean was born on June 26th, 1939, in Olivet and raised on their family farm. He attended a one-room country school in Partello before transferring to Olivet High School in 8th grade. At Olivet High School he became a standout football player and, along with his team, became state champions during his high school career in the 1950’s. He was an active member of the Olivet FFA where he gained experience raising and showing cattle at the local fair, a passion rooted in his upbringing on the family farm.

To support his passion for farming, he worked in various labor-intensive fields, including construction and truck driving where he developed an understanding of building and logistics. Dean spent most of his professional career at Aluminum Extrusion (AE) in Charlotte starting as a general laborer learning the fabrication trade and eventually becoming a master at these skills and earning a spot as a supervisor. The skills he learned were often useful on the farm when a piece of equipment needed repair. Even during his retirement years, Dean worked for his son logging and farming.

Dean fell in love with Esther after watching her play the saxophone in her family band in Eaton Rapids August 6, 1960. Shortly after marrying they established a farm in Olivet where they worked as a team raising hogs, cattle, and cash crops. While managing the farm together, Dean also worked in the factory to provide for their growing family.

Dean, along with Esther, raised his family through good times and bad times, never complaining, and always keeping a positive outlook. He wasn’t a stranger to having fun around the neighborhood, riding snowmobiles in the winter with their 1960’s/70’s Ski-Doos, playing euchre, swimming in the pool on the farm, woodworking with the local 4-H youth, attending Moose Lodge activities and traveling in their camper and showing cattle.

Dean and Esther really enjoyed meeting people especially during their later years when they would spend their winters in Florida in a park full of snowbirds.

Dean will be greatly missed by his devoted wife, Esther; daughter, Tammy (Marv) Maurer; son, Brad (Kris) Shrontz; his four grandchildren, Cory (Rachelle) Maurer, Ashley (Jake) Adams, Brandan (Sarah) Maurer, Shannan (Angie) Maurer; ten great grandchildren; Camden, Connor, Audrie, Kasen, Clair, Levi, Sawyer, Nora, Delaney, and Dawson.

Dean was preceded in death by his beloved grandson, Trenton John Clair Shrontz; parents, Clair and Mildred Shrontz; siblings; Miles and Darrel.

Dean will always be remembered by his contagious grin and good-natured attitude leaving a lasting impression.

A special thank you to Dean’s nurses at PineView Assisted Living at NorthPointe in Battle Creek for their special care of Dean and Esther during his time there.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, December 23, 2025, at 11 A.M. at the Burkhead-Green-Kilgo Funeral Home with Pastor Todd McLane officiating. The family will receive friends on Monday from 4 P.M. to 6 P.M. at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service on Tuesday. Burial will take place at Clarence Center Cemetery.

Flowers are welcome or memorial gifts may be directed to: Trenton Shrontz Memorial Playground P.O. Box 367, Olivet, MI 49076
