From Taipei to Tuscany to Tampa, BreCON 2026 brought together a global community of experts committed to advancing the care of upper limb amputees, and we’re proud to have been at the center of it. 🌎🦾

As the largest international conference dedicated to upper limb amputation management, this year’s meeting was held in Charlotte and highlighted the power of multidisciplinary collaboration. Under the direction of Dr. Glenn Gaston and Dr. Bryan Loeffler, hand surgeons and co-founders of the Reconstructive Center for Lost Limbs at OrthoCarolina, the OCRI team hosted a world-class program that united surgeons, therapists, prosthetists, and mental health professionals from across the globe.

With keynote addresses from thought leaders, Dr. Oskar Aszmann and Dr. Max Ortiz Catalan, and in-depth discussions on targeted muscle reinnervation (TMR), osseointegration (OI), team-based models of care, and the use of virtual reality for phantom limb pain, BreCON continues to drive meaningful progress in both research and clinical practice.

OCRI is committed to advancing orthopedic innovation through collaboration, research, and education, improving outcomes for patients worldwide.

We want to give a huge thank you to everyone who attended, spoke and sponsored this event. BReCON 2026 wouldn't have been possible without you!

This story highlights something we see time and again in surgical care: how closely connected the human body is, and how critical awareness in the operating room can be.

For hand surgeons like Glenn Gaston, MD, and Randall McKnight, MD, treating limb difference and complex upper extremity conditions means looking beyond a single diagnosis and understanding the patient as a whole. That connection between patient care and research continues to expand what we know, helping refine how we approach surgical decision-making and long-term outcomes.

Every case at OrthoCarolina contributes to a broader clinical understanding—helping advance more informed, connected, and personalized care for the patients we serve.

With a total of 280 studies underway at OCRI, Dr. Riboh dives into one ACL study that has major implications for the future care of patients.

It all started when Dr. Riboh notices that a seemingly identical patient population wasn’t responding identically after ACL surgery. Why were some patients recovering better than others? That’s what we wanted to figure out!

By looking at the patients on a cellular level, our hope is that we’re able to help patients recover faster and get back to the activities (like soccer) that much faster.

But this research takes a lot time and money to see through to the end, “basic science (research) is not for the faint of heart.” We’re proud to partner with Dr. Riboh on this journey.

You never know where research inspiration will strike!

For Dr. Pat Connor, it was while following US Open tennis news. Wanting to put the need for surgical intervention for a partially torn rotator cuff to the test, Dr. Connor turned to the OrthoCarolina Research Institute (OCRI) and they started collecting data.

Because of this study, and subsequent publication of their results, the research team was able to save patients from unnecessary surgery.

The orthopedic treatments and procedures of today will not be the same as those tomorrow. OCRI is uniquely positioned to meet the opportunities and challenges of the next 25 years of innovation, but we can’t do it without your help! Support research like this by visiting the link in our bio.

Last week and the physicians of the Sports Medicine Center welcomed about 275 guests to the 44th Annual Oscar Miller Day research symposium.

Oscar Miller Day is a celebrated, regional orthopedics-focused continuing medical education event attended by healthcare practitioners, physical and occupational therapists, and athletic trainers from all over the Southeast. All day, industry leaders in Hand, Foot and Ankle, Sports Medicine, Pediatrics, and Spine subspecialties talk about how they diagnose and treat sports-related injuries in their own varied practices.

Among those speaker were team physicians for professional football, baseball and soccer leagues where they discussed the ins and outs of caring for professional athletes in a roundtable discussion.

Thank you to all who attended and we look forward to the 45th Oscar Miller Day next fall!

Congratulations to Dr. Andrew Abadeer on winning two recent awards! 🎉

Dr. Abadeer is wrapping up his Fellowship with the team at the OrthoCarolina Hand Center and is adding the Atrium Fellow Teaching Award and the Regional Fellowship Research Award to his growing list of achievements.

He is the first fellow to earn both awards in the same year and continues the OC Hand Center’s legacy by earning the Teaching Award- that team has received nearly two-thirds of awards since the program’s inception.

To all of OC’s 17 Fellows in the Class of 2025: Your hard work, dedication to research, and talent made this year one for the record books. As this year’s fellowships wrap up, we can’t wait to see what you all accomplish next!

Join us in congratulating these Residency graduates! 🎓🎉

Partnerships with global research institutions are paramount to the work we do to make lives better. One of the partners in our own backyard is the Atrium Health Carolina’s Medical Center Orthopedic Surgery Residency program who honored six residency graduates and their impactful research today.

We could not be more proud of the impactful research each of these individuals have produced alongside our team and we wish them all the best as they continue on to fellowships and medical practice.

Key Research Takeaways from OCRI’s Groundbreaking Opioid-Free Surgery Research:
🔸 We found a safe and effective opioid alternative during and after surgery.
🔸 Starting at 12 hours after surgery, patients in the opioid free group had significantly less pain than the patients that took opioids.
🔸 Patients in the opioid free group were significantly more comfortable at 12 and 24 hours after surgery.
🔸 At 6 weeks, patients in the opioid free group were more satisfied with their pain control.
