Some photos from my last weekend in LA with my Queen and her beautiful children. I’m moving myself and my business to Vermont and starting a new life chapter. Embracing the challenge now and ever. We had a great time in LA spending some Q time with my wonderful family family for the sendoff. .ballentine

If Improving movement quality is a goal you have but you have pain… You don’t have to wait. Of course we naturally think the problem is where the pain is. In acute injury the healing is there, and the pain sensation is there. That pain is some kind of accurate measure of where and what is happening is far from the reality. The whole body and mind must work together in every way. The coordination of every system, subsystem, region, layer, thought, every cell in your entire body depends on every other one. They are inextricably connected. Being able to feel, sense, and deepen that connection through movement is something truly wonderful. Experiencing yourself more fully is time well spent.

Working with Herbert here on a vision, patience, and softness task. His performance in other tasks following always improves.

Just wrapped up a 12 week internship with . have created a world healthcare treasure trove of evidence based insight, guidance, and effective strategies to care for all those around us across the globe. It was an outstanding experience and the journey has only begun. I would recommend this coursework strongly to any healthcare or movement professional looking to blend their art with the science. Moving beyond prescribed protocols and linear exercise is the type of progress we all need.

Following up on my last post with a great example of using rhythm and coordination working together in healthy motion. This is a beautiful, FUNctional, and integrative bilateral arm swing coordination from
This coordination can be mined for so many benefits. The peripheral exploration of relaxed swinging arms here can be researched to better understand the communication from feet to fingertips. Where is the alignment off? How do the three masses of the body — Head, Chest, pelvis, dance and play? Can they relate well over the feet? Where do I over do? Do I rotate far one way and not the other? Do I overdrive from the arms and under drive from the feet? When you move and exercise, if you are not asking yourself important questions then what will you learn?

This is a great example of some of the ways overactive pectoralis or upper chest/pec muscles can dramatically alter movement patterns and disrupt relaxation of the neck and upper extremities. Excessive muscle tension in this area can disconnect the trunk and overload the spine through a variety of mechanisms. Among some of the most important are the alteration of good scapula connection to the ribcage or chest as well as negatively influencing normal respiratory and postural mechanics of the diaphragm. Once the disruption occurs it moves through the body like falling dominoes altering good joint position both far and close.

Happy Monday! There’s no feeling quite like moving… Discovering relaxation, rootedness, body connection, intention, shape, and gesture are definitely some of the most impactful movement discoveries I’m most grateful for.

Sound ON. Rhythm and timing are so essential to rehabilitation or movement optimization of any kind. The bones in our body come in a variety of lengths, shapes, and sizes. While we move this means that different bones are accelerating or decelerating at different rates. In this step example the ankle, knee, and hip work together in rhythm with different speeds at each respective joint. Use of a metronome is one simple but effective way to both assess and improve this essential component of healthy motion. There are many.

This shape, gesture, symbol, exercise has been a regular part of my personal exercise practice for about 15 years. It may be familiar to many from Tom Myers Anatomy Trains — Deep Front Line or Front functional line. I can think of endless reasons why the strength, coordination and connectivity across the front of the body is so important. The most obvious one that comes to mind is how opposite this is from slump sitting and looking at a computer or phone. This is especially true if you’re looking through the trees at the sky as you do it. We are such complex organisms whose health depends on the connectivity and communication of everything to everything. My friend and Chu Tai Chi mentor Hyland Harris explained it to me once so perfectly. “To further define the center we gently explore the periphery. Physical, mental, energetic and emotional peripheries frame the core.” I think of my own and my clients ‘core’ as far more than their abdominal muscles.
