Did you know that over 40% of men 65+ have high blood pressure, and many are unaware of it?

And that prostate cancer is most common in men over 65, yet screening rates remain low?

Regular checkups can catch silent killers early—heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and cognitive decline.

But men are half as likely as women to go to the doctor.

This Health Month, let’s encourage senior men to take charge of their health.
✅ Schedule a screening
✅ Talk to a provider
✅ Stay active and connected

Prevention is power.

🧠 1 in 7 men aged 70+ lives with a mental health disorder, yet many go undiagnosed due to stigma and silence.

💔 Loneliness affects nearly 25% of older adults, increasing the risk of depression, heart disease, and even early death.

This November, let’s change the narrative.

Mental health is just as important as physical health. Encourage the senior men in your life to talk, connect, and seek support. Whether it’s a coffee chat, a walk, or a wellness check, your presence can make a difference.

Let’s show up for them.

When Ryan was diagnosed with ALS, he and his fiancée Katie were five months away from their wedding day. What followed wasn’t the life they imagined, but they found strength in one another. 💙

As a nurse and a natural caregiver, Katie prepares for the day when Ryan will be fully dependent on her. She reminds us that caregiving is an act of love lived out every day.

This , we honor caregivers like Katie who show us what it means to love in the face of uncertainty.

Honoring Our Veterans

Today we pause to recognize the brave men and women who have served our country.

But the truth is — their service and sacrifice isn’t contained to just one day a year.

Veterans carry their experiences, their courage, and their sacrifice with them every single day.

Some bear visible scars; many carry invisible ones. Yet, veterans continue to show up day after day for their families, their communities, and their work with dedication, humility and strength.

That’s just what warriors do.

This example teaches us:

✅ Veterans do not seek the limelight

✅ True service is quiet, humble and steady

✅ Sacrifice is not a part time behavior, it lasts long after the uniform is folded

✅ Freedom is protected by ordinary people doing extraordinary things

So while we’re grateful on Veterans Day, may we also remember our warriors on the ordinary days… the Tuesdays in June, the early mornings, when we see a news story from a far away land involving a veteran and their family, and all the moments in between — when no one is watching.

To all Veterans:

On behalf of us all at HomewatchCaregivers of Mooresville Homewatch CareGivers and the communities we serve…

Thank you for protecting what many of us will never fully understand.

Thank you for the pieces of yourselves that service demanded.

Thank you for continuing to lead, love, and live with purpose.

We honor you today — and every day.

Thank you. ❤️

As we say goodbye to summer this week and welcome the crisp, cool days of fall, we are excited to share the Conway family of Templeton Bay as our featured neighbors. Martin and Juliane and their four children, Clare (18), Ryan (15) and twins Norah and Ella (10), fill their days with sports and hard work and community service. Martin and Juliane own the Mooresville and Charlotte Homewatch CareGivers, an in-home care company for those in need of extra assistance.

In this month's issue find where to pick apples, a delicious apple bread recipe, and places to play and tips for playing pickleball. Our resident historian, Andy Poore of the Mooresville Public Library Archives Department, shares the story of the McLelland Family, hope Anderson teaches us about essential learning, and Captain John Johnson explains why you need a marine radio on the lake. As always, our monthly calendar shares all the fun festivals and events in LKN and beyond and Rob Cannon highlights our Hometown Hero, 2nd Lt. Matt Zagar.

Our resident expert contributors include Eddie of Tarantino Law, PLLC, who shares why updating your estate plan during a divorce, Joanie Baker educates about college lists, Bryan Lawson of Xhale Construction unveils the important, hidden systems in our homes, Annie Hanson of The Closet Niche shares back-to-school tips for organization, and our business spotlight is on our new sponsor and experts in home renovation, Home Theory, a family-owned, comprehensive, highly-rated renovation and design company. We are excited to welcome Uplift Pelvic Health, LLC, Compass College Consultants, Sublime Home Improvements, and Geekspeoplelike.com to the Lakeside Living family. These sponsors help us to produce and deliver our magazines for FREE to over 300 lakeside communities, to showcase our amazing residents and resources, and to educate tens of thousands of residents in LKN.

AREA BUSINESS OWNERS: Don't miss the Ascent Business Builder's Summit on October 8th from 7:30am to 12:30pm at the Cain Center of the Arts. This event will offer valuable tips for business profitability and growth.

Please continue to send us neighbors we need to know for our cover stories, photos of your pets, recipes, fun places to go, and any suggestions you have for us.

And just like that...October sneaks up on us (Boo!), and we fly into fall like a witch on her broom. Welcome to cooler fall days, college football Saturdays and NFL Sundays, baseball playoff season, firepit evenings, and leaves changing and falling. Check out all the fun fall activities in our Halloween Fun Guide and local events guide and our article on the N.C. State Fair that is starting in a few weeks.

We are excited to highlight the Deal Family of the Canvasback Road community, Brenda & Don and their son Sam, who met at IBM and started as roommates and best friends. Brenda is the founder of the Dove House Children's Advocacy Center, an amazing nonprofit safe harbor in our community for abused children and both are very active in their church and our Mooresville community. The Dove House is also our Lakeside Giving nonprofit spotlight this month. It is also important to mention they are all big Buckeye Fans with Don and his son hailing from Ohio and Brenda from Vermont and N.J. but quickly adopted into the Buckeye traditions.

Also in this month's issue, resident historian Andy Poore of the Mooresville Public Library shares the history of Willow Valley graveyard, Captain John Johnson shares October lake activities, the Town of Mooresville NC highlights our K-9 officers, and our resident teen reporter, Tessa Rosenberg, cracks the code on local escape rooms. Our business spotlight is on Calm Waters Dentistry, Dr. Nick Wentworth and their brand new office at exit 33 at Rte. 21 and Medical Park Road.

Our local experts educate us on various topics, including explaining emotional wellness in seniors by Martin Conway of Homewatch CareGivers, the importance of recovery in your wellness plan by Janet Martin of Your Personal Best Fitness Studio Mooresville, how hearing loss is linked to dementia by Harlan Cato of Beltone Hearing Aid Center, the benefits of energy-efficient windows by Doug Lampert of Renewal by Andersen of the Carolinas, and how to get trail ready and where to ride your off-road ATVs or Can Ams in North Carolina by Susan Newsome of Lake Norman Power Sports.

In addition to all of our local business sponsors, we want to thank and welcome our new sponsors Aruza Pest Control, Window Genie of Lake Norman, and MNS Construction Inc. to the Lakeside Living family! Please use our local sponsors for your home and retail needs, as their support keeps our community publication mailing for free to our Mooresville neighborhoods. If you know any businesses who want to connect in our LKN communities, please share our local magazines with them! Since we are private to the 28117 communities, few businesses know we are here and a great place to advertise.

As you peruse our latest issue with your pumpkin-spice latte or apple cinnamon chai, please remember we welcome all ideas and suggestions, especially for residents we should feature and are always looking for recipes, pets to showcase, Veterans and students to highlight in our special Honoring Veterans and Back-to-School issues, and nonprofits or neighbors who give back for our Lakeside Giving feature.

Happy Fall Y'All!
