Incredibly proud of Dr. Hector Crespo Soto and his contributions to the advancement of patient care at Atrium Health’s Sanger Heart and Vascular Institute. Dr. Crespo Soto is part of the vascular surgery teaching faculty at Atrium Health and a 2016 graduate of our fellowship program.

Drs. Hamm and Danapal, our junior fellows, recently attended the Cardiovascular Fellows’ Bootcamp at Houston Methodist Hospital’s DeBakey Institute for Cardiovascular Education and Training. It’s a three-day course in the fundamentals of cardiovascular sciences that combines interactive didactic lectures with hands-on skills training. Our junior fellows attend this course each year.

Happy Match Day! We are excited to welcome Neil Poulsen, MD, and Mark Scaife, MD to our fellowship program beginning in the summer of 2019!

Dr. Poulsen completed medical school at St. George's University School of Medicine and is now a 4th year general surgery resident at St. Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, NJ. Prior to medical school, Dr. Poulsen played professional hockey and even spent some time playing with the Charlotte Checkers.

Dr. Scaife is currently a 4th year general surgery resident at UPMC Mercy in Pittsburgh, PA. He completed medical school at the University of Illinois College of Medicine - Rockford. Dr. Scaife was born in Portsmouth, England, has lived in four countries, and speaks three languages.

We look forward to having these future vascular surgery fellows in Charlotte.

Army LTC Shane McEntire, MD, FACS, RPVI, a 2017 graduate of our fellowship, performed the first TransCarotid Artery Revascularization procedure in the military health system at Brooke Army Medical Center in October, 2017. Dr. McEntire’s leadership in military vascular surgical care is a direct reflection of his continued commitment to his patients and providing the best possible care. Erin Murphy, MD, FACS and Gregory Stanley, MD, FACS recently enrolled and treated the first patient in the world in an investigational device exemption study for a venous self-expanding stent system. The implantation is part of a multi-center international trial, led by Dr. Murphy, the director for Sanger Heart and Vascular Institute's venous and lymphatic program.
Dr. Stanley will be taking the reins as program director for the Vascular Surgery Fellowship in June 2018 following Dr. Timothy Roush's retirement. We are fortunate to have both of them as part of our fellowship's teaching faculty!

Congratulations to Christopher Mitromaras, MD, one of our senior fellows, for being selected as the Resident of the Quarter for Atrium Health!
In his nomination, Dr. Mitromaras is described as someone who “makes a difference every day he shows up to the hospital” by “helping patients, educating nurses, and reassuring families.” “He takes time to answer questions, spends time at the bedside, and demonstrates outstanding care for his patients.”

Welcome to the page for the Vascular Surgery Fellowship at Carolinas Medical Center! We are a two-year ACGME accredited fellowship training program, focused on developing well-rounded vascular surgeons of the highest caliber, adept and facile with all aspects of clinical vascular practice. Fellows operate at the main campus of Carolinas Medical Center, an 874 bed tertiary referral center that is part of the nationally recognized Carolinas HealthCare System/Atrium Health and home to 23 ACGME accredited residencies and fellowships. The nationally and internationally recognized faculty are actively involved with and leading large multicenter clinical trials in the aortic, peripheral and venous practice areas. Fellows can expect a high-volume experience of both open and endovascular surgeries, with extensive exposure to complex aortic repair, CLI/limb salvage and complex venous reconstruction. To maximize their training, fellows have the support of designated vascular research assistants, a full complement of advanced care practitioners and a categorical 5-year General Surgery Residency Program.
