New CARFAXinc data shows nearly 1 million vehicles on U.S. roads have open recalls for defective LATCH connectors, potentially putting millions of children at risk.

LATCH is the child seat anchoring system required in most vehicles since 2003. Defects such as faulty welds, misaligned anchors or problematic coatings can prevent car seats from being installed correctly or staying secure.

CARFAX findings show these recalls affect hundreds of thousands of vehicles across many makes and model years, making recall checks especially important for families.

Can you spot the mistake?

Certified technician observations show that while many individual installation components are correct, overall only ~12 % of car seats were installed and used 100 % correctly in a national sample.

Once children outgrow the five-point harness in their forward-facing car seats, booster seats lift them so the adult seat belt fits properly. The ability to safely ride without a booster seat will depend on size/height of the child and fit of the seat belt, NOT the child’s age.

There are many milestones in a child’s life - some are wonderful, some just happen, and some shouldn’t be rushed. There are many types of car seats, but just four stages keep children safe in a vehicle from birth until they fit in the adult seatbelt:

💛 Rear facing - Provides the best protection for a young child's spine. Rear face for a minimum of 2 years, ideally until the seat is outgrown.

💛 Forward Facing - When a child has outgrown their rear facing convertible seat and is at least 2 years old, move to a forward facing 5 point harness.

💛 Booster - When a child has outgrown their harnessed seat, is at least 5 years old, and is mature enough to sit properly, move to a belt positioning booster.

💛 Adult Seat Belt - When a child is at least 10 years old and can pass the 5 step test, move to the seat belt alone.

The start of a new year is the perfect time to double-check your car seats and booster seats. Little ones grow fast, so take a moment to check some critical safety points. A growing child's height or weight may require adjusting the harness height, changing the installation method or switching to a new mode of use or a new car seat. Check your manual for guidance and peace of mind on the road!
