Who gets a bed in NC’s state psychiatric hospitals — and who waits?

North Carolina’s three state-operated psychiatric hospitals are struggling to meet demand as staffing shortages keep hundreds of beds offline and patients wait weeks or months for care. At the same time, a growing share of limited hospital capacity is taken up by criminal defendants ordered by courts to receive psychiatric treatment before their cases can proceed.

Long hospital stays, combined with rising involuntary commitment orders and court referrals, have reshaped who is treated and have narrowed access for people experiencing mental health crises in the community. State officials say recent legislation is likely to further strain the system by increasing mental health evaluations without adding new capacity or mental health funding.
