Hey All,
I saw a post on TikTok about new postmark rules for mail and I wanted to share it. I did a quick Google search and saw indeed the new postmark rules have gone into effect on December 24th. Please read what I have posted carefully. Especially those that like to do mail in voting like I do. This could make a difference in when your ballots arrive if you use the post office.
Yes, the USPS did implement significant postmark rule changes, effective December 24, 2025, which shift when postmarks are applied, meaning the date stamped on mail can now be days after you dropped it off, impacting time-sensitive deadlines like taxes or bills. The new rule applies machine postmarks at regional processing centers, not at the local collection point, so you must go inside a post office and ask for a hand-stamped postmark or use certified mail to get a receipt for the exact date you mail it to meet deadlines.
What's Changing?
Old Way: Mail dropped in a blue box often received a postmark reflecting the date it was accepted by the local post office.
New Way (Effective Dec 24, 2025): Machine postmarks are applied at regional sorting facilities, so the date reflects the start of processing, which can be days later.
Why It Matters:
Federal and state laws often use the postmark date for deadlines (e.g., tax filings, charitable donations, legal documents).
A later postmark can make your payment or filing appear late, potentially incurring penalties, even if you mailed it on time.
How to Ensure Your Mail is Postmarked on Time:
Mail Early: Send time-sensitive items several days before the deadline.
Go Inside: Request a manual, hand-stamped postmark at the retail counter of a local post office.
Use Certified/Registered Mail: This provides a dated receipt as proof of mailing.
Consider Alternatives: Use online portals or other official payment methods for critical items.
