Behind the Brave ...

Moving on doesn’t mean forgetting, minimizing or pretending it didn’t happen. Growth is about acknowledging the truth of what you’ve been through and choosing to carry it forward with dignity, self-respect and pride in your strength.

At Brave Step, we believe survivors deserve to reclaim their stories, not bury them. Every step forward is an act of courage, and every survivor deserves to move on in a way that honors their journey. 💜

🚦 One Brave Thing: Stop Cheering for Assault

At the 1997 MTV Movie Awards, 19-year-old Alicia Silverstone was presenting on stage when actor Jim Carrey, 30 at the time, grabbed and kissed her without consent. The crowd cheered.

What we saw was framed as “funny” or “spontaneous.” What actually happened was an adult man forcing a kiss on a young woman who didn’t agree to it.

When we applaud moments like this, we send the message that boundaries can be broken for entertainment. We teach survivors their discomfort doesn’t matter and perpetrators that their actions will be excused.

One brave thing we can all do: recognize and call out assault, no matter who does it or how public the setting.

Because consent is never optional.

🥂 A Toast to 10: The Power of a Voice

When Sharon first came to Brave Step, she wasn’t sure how or if she could share her story. Through connection, growth and courage, she discovered the power of her voice.

Now, that voice isn’t just hers; it’s a catalyst for change. Sharon has spoken out, inspired others to find their own voices, and helped transform lives in ways she never imagined.

Her journey is a reminder: when one voice speaks, it can spark a chorus.

Thriving doesn’t mean avoiding the pain of sexual trauma. It means having the courage to face it head-on. Recovery requires us to go through the hard parts, not around them. And while the journey isn’t easy, it can lead to strength, resilience and a renewed sense of self.

At Brave Step, we walk alongside survivors as they move from surviving to thriving. Every story of courage reminds us that growth is possible, and thriving is within reach. 💜

When someone we care about experiences sexual violence, it impacts us too. Feelings of fear, anger, guilt or helplessness can be heavy to hold on your own.

That’s why we created Loved Ones, a supportive community where friends, family and partners of survivors can come together, share openly and find strength in connection.

Recovery doesn’t happen in isolation. By walking alongside others who understand, you’ll discover new ways to support your loved one and yourself.

💜 Our next Loved Ones groups begin soon. Space is limited, reserve your spot today.

One Brave Thing: Insight from Dr. Lisa Littlejohn Hill

"My clinical work has offered me the opportunity to hold space for and with many survivors of sexual trauma. Never is that space more tender and tough, than with that of male survivors. Research suggests that 1 in 13 boys experience sexual abuse during childhood, and 1 in 10 men will experience sexual assault at some point during their lifetime. The stigma and myths of male invulnerability can be a barrier for seeking help and many men go most of their lives without disclosing. Like that of other survivors of sexual trauma, the psychological and emotional impact of male sexual trauma is wide-ranged and can include depression, intimacy and relationship issues, shame or self-blame, addiction, employment instability and suicidal ideation. These issues and others are often hidden within silence and isolation. Understanding male socialization, breaking stigmas through supportive networks, and advocacy are identifiable ways that we as a community can better understand the uniqueness of this pervasive issue. In addition, when loved ones, friends and allies ensure male survivors that they are believed, seen, and heard, they simultaneously create space for healing and recovery."

🥂 A Toast to 10: Recycled Soles, Renewed Hope

In 2018, Brave Step launched Recycled Soles, a unique campaign turning hundreds of used shoes into resources to support survivors of sexual violence.

One of our biggest champions? Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office, Charlotte NC. Their team rallied the community, collected an incredible number of shoes and proved that small steps can make a big difference.

Every pair recycled helped fund programs, raise awareness and remind survivors they’re not alone.

Here’s to creative ideas, community partners and the impact we make together. 👟💙

Behind the Brave 💙 | Generosity Across Generations

These words came from one of our youngest donors, and they hit us right in the heart.

It’s proof that advocacy, compassion and courage can ripple across generations. That when survivors speak up and fight for change, they inspire those around them -family, friends and even the youngest among us to carry the mission forward.

To this young changemaker: thank you for standing beside your grandma and every survivor. You’re helping to build a future where respect, love and safety are the norm.
