✨The Intersectionality of Grief, Joy, and Gratitude: Holding Space for the Holidays After Loss✨
✍️ By Melanie E. Burnett, M.S., LCMHC

Excerpt:
"Grief is unpredictable during the holidays. One moment, you can feel okay, and the next, a familiar scent, a holiday song, or a family tradition can open the floodgates of memory and longing.

In the therapy room, I often describe grief as love with nowhere to go—a form of attachment energy that continues to reach for connection. And that’s exactly what it feels like for me now. My mother’s absence carries the quiet echo of her love, still shaping the contours of my life in subtle, everyday ways. Allowing myself to feel that ache, rather than fight it, has become an act of self-compassion."

Intimate Partner Violence Month
✍️ By Liz Holloway, MA, LCMHCA

Excerpt:
"Domestic violence can often look like physical violence involving the use of physical force in an attempt to hurt your partner; sexual violence involving the force, manipulation, or coercion to engage in sexual activities when a partner cannot or will not consent; stalking or an unwanted continued amount of aggressive attention, unwanted contact, or threats towards the target or their loved ones; and psychological aggression involving emotional abuse intended to harm the victim. There are many other forms of domestic violence that can be recognized, including financial abuse, religious abuse, lateral abuse, and legal abuse; the commonality of the abuse is one person’s intent to harm someone."

✨The Unique Language of ADHD✨
✍️By Zackary J. Schlegel, M.S., LCMHCA

Excerpt:
"Take this example; We are having a conversation about your favorite fruit. You swear by honeycrisp apples, but I say cotton candy grapes are the best. Naturally, we debate with no real goal of convincing the other to change, just that we are right and they are wrong. However, halfway through our conversation about fruit, I start talking about how good the movie “IT” is, and that you should totally watch it. Hm, one moment we were on grapes, now we’re on horror movies. To your average person, these things have absolutely nothing in common and I just randomly changed the subject. But to the ADHDer, this transition makes perfect sense.
Let me explain..."

👉 Zack says, "I use a combination approach to therapy that uses emotionally focused techniques as well as structural therapeutic techniques. In combining these approaches, I am able to help a client fully experience their emotions, while also helping them to change the way they view their concerns and feelings. I also firmly believe that mental health is for everyone, and everyone should be able to fully express themselves. "

✔️ Favorite Pizza Topping: My favorite pizza topping is mozzarella cheese with sundried tomatoes and basil (AKA Pizza Margherita)

✔️ Fun Fact: A fun fact about me is that I am originally from New Jersey and have 100% Italian ancestry.

✔️ Favorite holiday: My favorite holiday is Halloween because it's always interesting to see the crazy decorations people come up with each year.

If you want to work with Zack, you can reach him at (980)880-4253 or zschlegel@scgnc.org!

Feeling your Feelings: What does that even mean?!
By Rev. Katherine Sherrill M.A., LCMHC, MT-BC
Excerpt:
"Many of us know how we are feeling. We learn emotional vocabulary from a very young age. However, it can be confusing when you are starting therapy and you have a therapist ask–where or how are you feeling that emotion? What does that even mean!?"
